Does anyone know of a place to purchase regular Savage Actions.

I have found Savage competition actions at several places but those are all well over $500.

I saw only 1 used Savage rifle at a gun show this weekend and it was $600.

I am looking for one of their normal actions I can re-barrel, add a trigger and stock and would rather not start with an investment that high.

Thanks.

I got mine off GunBroker as a complete rifle.  With shipping and FFL fees, about $375.  Then sold the parts to recoup some of that back.

Wait till the end of the year when Savage runs rebates and part out what you don't need.

Maybe look for a savage model 12fv. I got mine new for around 300 if I recall.  Comes with a heavy barrel too.

Thanks to all who responded. I will keep my eye out at pawn shops and gun shows for something cheap. That's what I did last time and got a Model 110 at a pawn shop for about $300 total. I also converted a Stevens model 200, which was essentially a Savage Model 10, or short action, but it has been a decade.

Anyway, thanks again.

Agree on keeping an eye out for specials/sales. just a few months back cabela's had a big sale on the 12fv's and savage had a rebate many people ended up with near free actions just from parting them out.

Also keep an eye out on local adds I have bought a few for $200-300 with slings, scopes, ammo ect... one was a .243 sold the extras and ended up with a $60 action/stock. bought a couple in .308 ended up keeping the stock on one (wood) and sold it with a Tupperware stock for $50 more than I paid for it. the other I sold the scope (a leupold vari-x ii) and rifle separate and made a few bucks on it as well (found the .243 a week or two later and all I needed was the action so I sold the .308 complete for said reason). then the latest was a 300 WM paid $200 flat for it too came with a bunch of ammo (some being federal premium like $60 box of ammo)a pacymer butt pad, traded out the bolt head for a 30-06 head. that got built into a .260 with dbm, boyds stock, ect... still have the barrel, stock with pad and the ammo. haven't tried all that hard to sell it so I may just keep it around in case I decide I want to swap it back (I already had a spare magnum bolt face) for a elk hunt or something.

there like a disease I have have spare stock barrels in 30-06, 22-250, 300wm and .308

Your cheapest option will be to start with an Axis.

You could also look at aftermarket actions based on the R700 that take Savage barrels.

Bighorn Origin, ARC, etc.  More money though.

If I don't find anything new in the next few months I may order an Axis. I have seen non-accutrigger models as low as $310.

If the barrel nut system is the same, it seems like it would be no problem.

barrel nut/threads are the same but be warned that it does have its handicaps. the biggest being stock options. it uses a different recoil lug system than the traditional savages. it stays in the stock and the action is machined for it vs the lug being sandwiched between the nut and action like most bolt rifles.

My FFL/pawn shop has several. I will likely end up with one of those. Thanks to all who responded!

Steer clear of the Axis if you're wanting to replace the stock.  Not as many options for aftermarket stocks for the Axis.

Check out Gunbroker. They usually have plenty of cheap Savages for sale. Great way to get an action!

If you can't find a used Savage rifle for 300.00 or less, you're doing a whole slew of shit wrong.

Just bought a Savage Axis XP 30.06 camo from the Walmart clearance thread for $199.99 and Savage has a rebate for $60 back for this and 2 other rifles. Could not pass up a 30.06 for $140
