Generally speaking, what ammo weight is preferred for the 17?

Mine loves FGMM 175gr (.308 and 7.62). Haven't tried 168gr yet.

That’s what I was thinking.   Then I saw this.

Being that it's a 1 in 12 twist and was designed around M80 147gr I'd say 125 to 175 will work fine. Mine shoots 150gr very well. Multiple reports out there of 180gr and up not shooting well, too slow a twist rate for the heavies.

168gr SMK are unbelievably accutate out of my 17S.

I’m currently on Hirt ball for practice, and 150gr Fusions for killing stuff. Despite the 1/12 twist, it doesn’t seem to be too picky, and FN 1/12’s in general seem to go up to 175’s/178 ‘s just fine from my experience with both my 17 and old SPR A1.

168 SMK flying at 2450 can hit 12" steel at 600 w/ 1-8 ATACR

Barnes 130 TTSX at 2800 can shoot .5MOA
makes me laugh when I look at the target -  my precision buddies don't like it

am impressed with the accuracy of the system

Mine seems to like 147gr to 168gr. 175gr and up were pretty mediocre.

Seems like a versatile platform.   I’ll start at 147.

The favored load for in house testing is the 168GR SMK Federal Gold Medal Match. However other loads are used as well, the AE168gr load for the M1A (with is very similar to the GMM load) has shown good accuracy as well at a slightly lower cost . As far as best preforming, commonly available, factory loaded ammo goes though you really cant beat 168gr FGMM.

I as well, 5-Shoot group at around or slightly under MOA off some bags with a 1-6 and non-precision reticle. It is a shooter no doubt

Y’all are making me want to throw one of my orphan scopes on my 17 and see what it can do. I’ve never really shot it for groups. 168 FGMM is usually considered the standard for accurate factory .308 though, so I don’t doubt it’d shoot pretty great. Closest I came was Fusion 165’s with a TA-11 and it would do maybe 1.5ish MOA. Offhand I’d wonder if the 168 FGMM and a true scope could scrape at or under MOA (as above). Pretty impressive from a ‘battle rifle’.

My 17 loves Fed GMM and Magtech/CBC 168 SMK. I've had multiple 5 round bug hole groups at 100 yards without too much effort, and it's not uncommon to go 5:5 on 10" plates at 550 yards.

I just got a factory 13" barrel and am really hoping it gives me similar precision.

So where you think I should start out?  With 168 grain or something else?

If you’re chasing groups, start with the 168 FGMM.

I have seen excellent accuracy out of everything from commercial 145gr all the way up to 175gr Mk316 out of my chopped 13" barrel.  The 130gr MK319 barrier blind ammo also has excellent accuracy, but the POA/POI is WAY off from other loads.

Mine shoots PPU 145 gr ball ammo into 3/4 MOA (5 shots @ 100 yards).  It will only shoot about 1.25 MOA with 168 gr GMM and more like 1.5 MOA with Hornady 168 gr.  I just bought some 130 and 150 gr Barnes Vor-tx to try in it...hopefully one of them will shoot well enough to hunt with.  150 gr Federal Fusion did not shoot well in it at all.

Mine does best groups with 168gr FGMM.  It will shoot 1MOA consistently and I can run back to back mags and stay in the 1MOA range.  175 the best I can put up is 1.5-2 but I suspect it has something to do with the 1 in 12 twist.
