I bought a left hand Ruger GSR online.   It isn’t used and has the 17.25” barrel.  I’ve always used older Remington 700s or Weatherby Mark Vs in magnum calibers so I am entering into uncharted territory.  I’m not attached to the scout scope concept but was looking for a reliable mag fed 308 that is suppressor ready for less than $1,000.  I’ll probably do some deer and elk hunting with it and I’m set up to hand load.  Looking to get opinions on how to outfit it, what mags to buy, favorite scope set-up, etc.

ADM superwide works well to get an IER scope back far enough without bridging the loading port.

Bought a used Left Hand Ruger Gunsite Scout off grunbroker and picked it up from my dealer yesterday.

Looking at the following 2 scopes:

https://www.eurooptic.com/113165-Leupold-VX-R-HOG-125-4x20mm-30mm-Matte-FireDot-Pig.aspx

https://www.eurooptic.com/119675-Leupold-VXR-15-5x33mm-Scount-Matte-FireDot-Duplex-11.aspx

Need rings.

X-S has a full length rail with a built in sight. That gives you more mounting options than the Ruger receiver mount.

If you are going to take the rear sight off Warne would be my choice.

XS makes a rail that bridges the receiver which I don't like.

I want to keep the rear sight / location. Not a fan of that XS rail either. Just went over to Tech Sight's website expecting to find an elevation / windage click adjustable rear sight for the Scout, doesn't exist. Messaged them through their website asking them to make one.

https://www.tech-sights.com

Probably going to set it up so rear end of the scope sits 1/2ish over the chamber.
I like the reticle of the hog scope with it's ranging hash marks but with only 4 inches of eye relief, would need mount it more over the chamber.

The Leupold Scout Scope's reticle is basic but might start with that one. Zero it for 200yds and go from there.

Going to research mounts. I don't want a scope mount that puts the scope up high like most of these AR15 mounts do.
Want to keep the scope as low as possible.

Tech needs to make something like that. I'll shoot them an email as well.

Problem with mounting low on a 90deg. Mauser action is the eye bell on the scope needs to be a small diameter so the bolt handle doesn't hit it, or get close enough that your hand doesn't have any clearance. I always end up going with a little higher rings and a stock saddle of some sort.

Then scroll up and look at my pic, that is an ADM superwide.

No offense but your mount seems a bit high for my tastes. I may go that route though.

Side question - do you note a lot of slop in the bolt when the action is open all the way?
Tried working my bolt fast this afternoon and was having difficulty. Seems to be a lot of play in the bolt.

Still need to get it to the range.

This is how it sits now with a cheap Ncstar Scope.

Scope just barely clears the rear sight. I get the whole low to the bore thing, but i wouldn't want it any lower than it is.  I can tell you it is a lot lower than what you have rigged there.

The nature of the bolt/bolt raceway there is definitely going to be side play, you just need to learn to function it in a linear fashion, not side load it. Good lube and vigorous bolt action is requisite with this gun.

I bought the gun used from gunbroker, that cheap scope came mounted on it.

What scope do you have on yours?

Weaver Super Slam Dangerous Game 1-5x x24 no longer in production. I bought two and put one on my GSR and the other on a Ruger Alaskan in .375R

@drobs I was watching that same rifle on Gunbroker.  Glad that a fellow ar15’er picked it up.  I’m thinking about mounting a Leupold 2-7x on my Gunsite.  do not want a a set-up that sits high enough to need a cheek piece.

If so, I’ll pull the rear site off and get some Warne rings.  Now, what sling and swivels?

Thanks brother! I wanted one with a longer barrel but couldn't pass up this price. I like the blued barrel.
The crappy scope might be one of the reasons he sold it.

I ordered a Leupold Scout Scope for mine.
Plan is to take the junker Ncstar off, sight in the irons, then mount / sight in the Leupold.

I've been doing some reading over here. Lots of Ruger GS Scout rifle owners:
http://www.scoutrifle.org

Their one and only board sponsor sells Ching Slings:
www.andysleather.com

I have an old 1907 style leather military rifle sling I plan to use. Similar to this style:

Some reading on leather slings:

A little update -

Shot a few rounds the other day out back of the house at 25 yds - was hitting clay pigeons on the ground with the iron sights. No issues there.

My major complaint is the action. Lots of slop in the bolt requiring precise handling.

I'm debating selling it. That action is garbage. What a disappointment.
I've never handled a bolt action rifle with such side to side slop in the bolt. It's just about impossible to make a quick second shot from the shoulder.

I contacted Savage and am having them build me a "custom" Left Hand 110 Scout. They will use receiver, accu-trigger, and stock from a Left Hand Desert Tan Tactical with the barrel, rail, and sights off a Right Hand 110 Scout. They gave me a MSRP of $1110. My dealer is charging me $1050.

I'll hold on to the Ruger until the Savage gets here and then make a decision on the Ruger.

An aside for anyone looking for a lefty RGS, Summit Gunbrokers says they have one or more for a decent price.

I looked at the RGS and the Mossberg MVP.  Then I somehow found the Savage Scout.  Seems to get good reviews so I had my FFL order one in .308.  Still waiting for it but it should be here very soon.  Should be around $700 after tax and FFL fees, so not a bad price.

I ordered the Vortex Crossfire II Scout scope for it, and the Daniel Defense mount for it- both have good mil discounts.  Those will be here next week.
