I made a post about possibly suppressing a Mini 14 Tactical about a year ago when I found this gun at my local fun store. But… I quickly found out that the Samson rail gets super hot after a few rounds, and I would not be able to sleep at night with a black gun in a stainless stock.  I sold the sight, stock, and rail on the EE and got a new stock from MidwayUSA. (I was able to preorder a black Samson stock from ShopRuger, so fingers crossed.) The first item on the to-do list was removing the factory flash hider. The one on my gun does not have wrench flats and was on there too tight to use a Crescent on the tines. I also had a hard time securing the barrel in a vise. My barrel blocks did not have the correct size cutout. I ended up clamping the barrel between wood blocks but still had to rely on the front sight to keep it from rotating. Since I couldn't get a good grip on the flash hider with a wrench, I couldn't get it to budge. I tried multiple sessions with a heat gun. Used lots of penetrating oil. Left the barrel in the freezer over night. Nope. I finally found an old post from Perfect Union where a guy says that he was looking under the FAQ section on the Ruger website and found a post stating that a Torx T60 fits perfectly in the flash hider. Attached File THIS WAS EARTH SHAKING NEWS! I thought I would have to drive to Lowe's but after going through my tool box I did find a T60. I was really hoping the front sight pin would hold when I put a breaker bar on the Torx bit and inserted it into the flash hider. I have it a serious tug and was rewarded with a loud "Pop". The barrel and sight seem to be intact, the gun is now wearing a Yankee Hill SRX flash hider. Attached File I touched up all of the scratches with some Oxpho Blu from Brownell's and installed a .050 gas port. And I can still use my sights if I don't have the suppressor cover installed. Attached File I love it when a plan comes together! ETA: Kudos to Ruger on building an indestructible flash hider. The Crescent wrench slipped multiple times. I tried a large screwdriver jammed in the tines, Channel Locks, and a pipe wrench. I don’t think I even scratched the factory flash hider! |

That’s a little odd. I recently purchased a Mini-30 Tactical. The flash hider with that one does have wrench flats. And they’re even the same as on a milspec A2 flash hider, because my M16 wrench fit just fine. No issue getting it off. I have shot mine a little with a Liberty Cosmic. It’s supposedly rated for rifle cartridges. But I think I’ll hold off and get a .30 can. Ideally something a bit shorter than a big .45 can. I’m also kicking around the idea of SBRing the thing. BTW, I had a black A-TM stock on backorder with shopruger and they shipped after maybe a month. Looks pretty good.

(the do state it is rated for it though) On topic, is there any extra wear from the increase system pressure or ? |

Your gun looks great! Can’t wait to get my folder in. ETA: I just looked at a pic of my previous Mini 14 Tactical. I bought it new 13 years ago so I don’t know if it was older or newer that this one. It has the same flash hider. I wonder if Ruger puts wrench flats on the 7.62 flash hiders so they can tell the calibers apart? |
