I'm getting ready to form 1 my old 870 with the original 18 in barrel and wanted to ask yall what length is the usual length to cut back to?
Also, what company does good work for cutting the barrel and tapping a new sight and threading for chokes at the new length? Thanks |

It's just a hair over 12" The folks that did mine don't do that kind of work anymore. I hear good things about Rose Action Sports link Edited to add a couple pics Attached File Attached File |

I might consider that but I'm thinking about getting as short as I can and it still be a pump action.

I used a belt sander to round off the top and bottom the the recoil pad and that helped some. |

I bought a factory 14" LE barrel; there was a guy on GB that sold them (this was a few years back.) Added the +1 extension and things lined up nicely.

I did the DIY version with a hack saw and some files. Fine if you're going for that look and it turned out well. I'm at about 12.25" to be flush with where I wanted it to line up on the tube.
OP don't do a stamp and then cut it to 14", may as well go short as possible. However be aware that any shorter than the flush tube becomes very expensive very fast. I checked into having my mag tube and arms shortened and it would be more expensive than just buying a mossberg/serbu shorty, and you're at like 2+1 capacity You can't get crazy short with a pump since you need all that action room. I may file and cut down an SxS I have laying around, seems like I could get it down to ~6" barrels easily enough. Plus it's basically the same capacity anyway. also, these will not end up as short as other stuff. I wanted a travel gun but the SBS is damn near as long as a tavor by the time it's all said and done. |

+1 for Rose. They did a great job threading a bunch of barrels for me. Also cut one down.
12.5" is a safe length for an 870. Depending on tube cap and any sling plates, muzzle might stick past 12.25". I was enamored by the MCS and wish I had just bought the package when I saw one for maybe $1600, think they are much more than that now. Even before Remington went bankrupt. I bought their upland express with approx the same ring location as the MCS. Going with the 10" barrel greatly limits your handguard choices. And its easy to pinch your fingers between the barrel ring and handguard. Or you worry about shooting a finger off at the muzzle. |

I bought a factory 14” barrel from AI&P. Price-wise, it was about the same as getting a longer barrel chopped. At least, at the time it was. I haven’t checked prices lately.
Mine was made & registered by a SOT, and originally came with a factory barrel cut down to 14”. It hit way high, so I drilled & tapped the rib for a bead, which fixed things up. I keep thinking I need to cut that barrel to around 10”, so it’s flush with the magazine cap. Otherwise I have a +1 mag extension to go with the 14” barrel. |

This is one of the first SBS’s that I did many many years ago (hense the excessive punisher logos). It was a cheap wingmaster, that got refinished, added the forend, mesa urbino stock and side saddle. I’m up to 8 SBS’s and 2 AOWs. |

Guys,
For those of you with 14 inch 870 SBS's. What magazine caps are you using? I attempted to slap a Magpul handguard on my work gun and I wasn't able to do so as the magazine cap wasn't threaded "deep" enough to keep the barrel in place without the sling mount acting as a spacer. I can't use the sling mount as it gets in the way of the handguard. Some guidance would be nice. Thanks! |

They are the shortest of all extensions I have seen and will not stick past the muzzle even when using a sling spacer. If you need to keep it secure and don't have the ball detent, they also sell wave washers. https://sjhardware.us/product/remington-870-1-mag-extension/ |
