I've used this for several barrels I cut down with good results.

I have done several, get the PTG 1964 pattern cutter, the pre 1964 looks nothing like any original garand crown

Shilling for 4D Rental again. Nothing in it for me, but the tools have always been sharp, shipped next day, great service.

You could try the screw method. A saw a number guys do it on the cmp forums and gun boards with good results.
