So my son is in Civil Air Patrol and is going on an outdoor survival class. On his packing list is a “quality” pocket knife. Any recommendations for a pocket knife that would be good for this type of class? Also I need it within a week so something in stock

The Honey Badger is well-regarded, and not too expensive: https://www.honeybadgerknives.com/

A little upscale from that is the Cold Steel Finn Wolf, the Code 4, or something a little bigger, the Range Boss. All good choices.

My personal EDC knife, the Kershaw Skyline, seems to be out of production, but you can still find them a few places, including Knife Center.

There's also the option of a multitool with a knife. The Leatherman Skeletool CX is something I think makes a great choice for a teenager.

Anyhow, good luck - great options abound!

Multitool, all the way.

I KNOW that Leatherman is a no-go as far as gun rights, but I've had several for decades at this point, and they still work perfectly for dozens of tasks.

At this point, buying brand new, I might be inclined to go with SOG Tools instead. https://sogknives.com/by-product-type/multi-tools/

This. Unless he really wants just a folding knife. In that case get a Kershaw Blur. Non serrated

Hogue Ritter RSK

ETA:  Looks like I was beat to the punch, so will 2nd that rec.

The Victorinox EvoGrip 18 is a great choice as well if you want to explore that route.

Your son doesn’t have a Buck 110 or Buck 112?  How do you call yourself Dad?

ZT0562CF.
Good cutter. Unlike some of the 'sharpened prybar' crap (like the ZT0300/ZT0350) carried by folks who don't ever really cut anything, the 'slicer' grind on the 0562 cuts well.

Cold Steel/Demko AD15
Interesting ambidextrous lock design. Another blade that's pretty good for bushcraft. Strong, but still cuts well.

Demko AD20.5
Another interesting Demko designed ambidextrous lock (Shark Lock). Solid design (would take catastrophic materials failure to close unintentionally under pressure). Decent blade (smaller than the other 2).

*** some or all might also be available on Amazon, but after receiving a fake ZT from Amazon, I stick to Blade HQ or Knifecenter for folding knives (or even Lamnia).

My son carries a Gerber multi tool. And any small Gerber knife. He is a GTM3 and Ranger third class.

Perfect for cadets, plus they will eventually lose the knife, whatever Gerber is cheapest at Walmart.

This is what my son has, and only $19.

SAK SwissChamp: it’s small enough to be handy and varied enough to be useful for a lot of non-knife chores.

This is an excellent choice OP!

I have a couple of the older BM Ritters and the new Hogue version; the Hogue is nicer. Excellent steel, excellent blade profile, and excellent locking mechanism. Worth every penny.

Ended up getting him a Buck. I can’t remember the model. It swerved him well and he liked it. Thanks for all the suggestions
