Depending on the actual grit, they should work just fine.
Since you're not trying to put a shine on something, these types of compounds will work well for sharpening. There are specific compounds for barber's strops but I saw little real difference between them and ordinary jeweler's polishing compounds. |

Yup. It's a rouge block.
I can't remember which one's finer...I think green. |
