The 6.5 grendel AR build is nearly complete. Just ordered a 20” Odin Works barrel last night.

I was able to pick up 2k CCI No. 41, 3lb varget, and 3 lbs CFE223 at a gun shop this weekend. They didn’t have small magnum primers, but arn’t the 41’s supposed to be hotter than standard?

I was thinking varget for accuracy and CFE223 for chasing velocity. Anyone have good luck with varget in the grendel?

How is the Hornady grendel brass? I’m sure it’s fine but don’t see a lot of options for new.

VithaVuori N133
IMR-8208
VihtaVuori N530

Alexander Arms used to have a lot of load data on their site. Don't know if it's still available.

Hodgdon, Accurate Arms/Western Powders and VihtaVuori have online data.

I shoot light bullets exclusively in my Grendel's.

90 grain Speer HP
95 grain Hornady
100 grain Lapua Scenar
107 grain Sierra Match Kings
108 grain Lapua Scenar

Lapua Scenar bullets aren't more expensive than other brands if you buy them in bulk. 1000 bullet boxes are $330 to $360 +/-.

My go to round is 26.0 grains of VihtaVuori N530 under a 107 grain SMK. 5/8" groups at 100 yards from my AA 18" 1/8 twist AR.

Good evening cmcque, all.

Fairly new to the 6.5G as well.

Varget? I am one of the odd-men-out who can't that powder to do squat. IMR 8208XBR is far and away better behaving in my loads. CFE 223? I have a bottle but unopened.

Being really new to the cartridge only one load is registered in my notes as a good solid performer: 29.6gr IMR 8208XBR, under a 90gr Speer TNT, in a re-worked 7.62X39 REM

small-rifle primed case and lit by a Rem 7 1/2 primer. C.O.A.L. = 2.2.

Edited for spelling.

I like to push the G pretty hard so Hornady brass lasts me about 5 reloads shooting max charge of 8208 under a 123 ELD.

There is also Starline and Lapua.

Just started reloading the 6.5G as well. Using reloader 15 with 120gn Barnes match burners. Picked up some 120gn Barnes TTSX for dear season. My 9yr and 11yr boys are hitting 8” plates at 200 yards with their 16” side charger uppers. Hope they both get their first deer this year.

Brian

ETA using Starline brass and 7.5 BR primers.

Hornady brass is ok.  You'll get 5-6 loads before the primer pockets loosen up to the point you have to trash it.

AR Comp is the powder to beat for the grendel, but good luck finding it now.  AA2520 has decent accuracy and velocity, but is temp sensitive.  XBR 8028 is fairly accurate, but can cause pressure spikes near max charges.  BLC-2 is pretty good for accuracy, but it's dirty and slower than AR Comp.  Same for TAC.  Varget will have good accuracy, but you will probably be around 2350-2400 fps with a 123 gr bullet.

With CFE 223, you'll probably find an accuracy node between 31.0-31.5 gr. Start low and work up.

Running a bear creek barrel, maxim bolt and Normandy brass. My rifle is killing my brass so far.. I starting annealing to try to get more mileage but I don't know if it has helped. getting a lot of cracking necks.

Got a new batch of 120s and 129s loaded for the next trip. Hoping they hold up b etter.

Either your sizing die is overworking the necks or your chamber is loose in the neck area.  Measure the OD of fired necks prior to resizing.

AR Comp is my go to.  Haven't tried CFE but I had a hard time getting my sought after velocities with all the other AR-standard powders.  Many of the powders are accurate  Starline and Laupa brass here.

I have a new 18" Odin barrel and it's shooting great so far. Hopefully yours will.

CCI 41's should work well, but I like the 450's better.

My hunting load is 27.5 grns of 8208 and the 120 grn Nosler BT's. Works great in both of my Grendels. Just slower than I like for distance.

I don't like CFE, it just seems dirty to me and the groups weren't that good. Varget is really slow.

For speed I prefer PPV or TAC.

TAC surprised me. It's been as accurate as 8208 in both barrels (or better) with the 123 grn Hornady BTHP's and the ELD's. I haven't tried it with anything else.

I think Hornady brass is soft and prefer Starline. The primer pockets last longer.

I've tried a lot of bullet/powder/primer combinations.

CCI 450 primers
27.5gr AR-Comp
Loaded to magazine length

Work up to this but many of us shoot it to great success.

Is the 450 or 205M primers the key?  I've been using Federal 205 primers and my results have been very disappointing.

Maybe. YRMV

450s are SR magnum. I use them in my 556 blasting ammo also.

I only use CCI primers.
