Traveling in Northern Wisconsin this week, eating cheese curds and drinking some Leinies'.   Stopped upon a local shop whereupon I ran across a nice Pre-64 Winchester 30-30.  $650 tag price. I might work them down a little if I apply some grease?

No rust, steel is worn, wood is nice.  Feels solid and action is smooth as butter.  1950s vintage they say.  Serial # in the 1,77xxxxx.  Will try to post some pics.

Anything I should inspect for?  Decent deal?  Looking for some more input from our experts.

I also did a little Web research:

Thanks in advance.

If I was looking for a 30-30 for that price I would get it.

LOL, I expected a little of that.

Probably the muzzle to make sure someone didn't run a cleaning rod over it like a saw.

But I would buy it!

Per SN, date of manufacture was 1950.

Do you want a 30-30?

If not, skip it.

Where were you?  I'm gonna run over and get it. JUST KIDDING.  I don't have any extra money, or time for road trips this week.

Honestly #JJREA, if I don't purchase it by Friday; I will post here where you can find it.

I got lots of other things I need to spend money on and this isn't at the top of my list.  Certainly a strong WANT :)

Any pre 64 will sell for $799 to $899 around here in not near as good a shape as that rifle.

Thanks, I've been looking at prices on Gunbroker and concur with your numbers.  This seems like a good buy I've found.  This is Northern Wisconsin and I'm willing to bet there are THOUSANDS of pre-64 94' Winchesters owned up here, thus the demand is lower and bargains to be found.

It is a gun I might see regularly in the woods.  But the last one I saw in the hands of a hunter was in .32 Winchester.

I don't have the money for one.  I was just joking.  I was curious as to what shop you were at though.......

Think I'm gonna pass on the purchase.  I dont need another safe queen and due to its age, I wouldn't want to take it outdoors and put it to hard use.

I already have much better investments and you only make money if you sell it at a profit, which I wouldn't plan on doing anyway.  So owning this would only give me bragging rights when I have freinds stop over for a beer :)  Two of my friends already have one too, LOL.

Gonna focus on getting a 45-70 in stainless next, probaby the new Marlin guide gun, as I can use that for Whitetails hunting here in Iowa (can't use a 30-30 in Iowa for deer). I figure custom handloads for the 45-70 will also be a lot of fun.

I picked these two up in the last few months for $600 and $481 out the door. I've noted a slump in the market lately and I think that's saying some not so nice things about the local economy.

The top one is a 1950 vintage .30-30 and the bottom one is a 1960 vintage .30-30.  Both are in very good condition overall, although the bottom one has a set of (very professionally installed) sling swivels.

I don't know that $650 is a bad price for one in that condition, as it'll continue to appreciate so it's a matter of buying too early, rather than paying too much.

BTW, for anyone interested in checking it out yourself or calling them:

Bader's Sport Center
Phillips, Wisconsin

And the tag price was $625, not $650.  I went again there today and took another look.  There is a little pitting and tiny amounts of rust inside the receiver on the bolt carrier and other internal components.

Too much.  I paid $450 for mine last year.  Mine was in much better condition, almost like new. The old man had two of them.

Thanks for posting that.  I have one that is an angle eject and I didn't know they went back to forged receivers.  I contemplated selling it a few days ago.  This changes my mind.
