What type of plinking ammo are you guys using for your Scar 17? I’ve read the opinions on bi-metal jackets and premature barrel wear and probably do not want to go that route. I know at some point it can save you money but even 5,000 rounds at a 12cpr difference does not make up a new barrel price. I’ve seen a couple that look decent in the .52-54cpr range. Thoughts?

PRVI M80:

Aguila:

It appears both of these are FMJ and do not contain any magnetic properties

I generally like PPU ammunition, so would probably go that route.  It's $10.11/box at Target Sports if you have the prime membership. If you buy this 500rd case it's $248.35 with Prime.

Tula. Think I just got a 500 case for like $135 shipped. I just punch paper and run drills out to 100m w/ muh CTME. (IK I'm just a peasent. Had a scar17, sold it to fund other projects.)

Never going to shoot the barrel out of that rifle. Steel wont hurt.

PPU works very well.
Malaysian surplus is some good shooting ammo.
Hirtenberger works very well.
White/brown box federal XM80c stuff shoots okay. It is bimetal...

I do not worry about an accuracy loss based solely on bimetal jacketed ammo.  Volume and heat are what erode barrels.

i have had surprisingly good luck with MFS 145 or 147gr.  Zinc-coated steel case, but reasonably accurate, maybe 1.5-2MOA.  I don't see much of it out there any more but if you can find it, cheap and goes bang every time.

I've had terrible accuracy with ZQI.  PMC 145gr is so-so.

Classic Firearms has 300rd cans of Malaysian surplus for $110ea if you buy 3 or more. That's $0.37/rd...hard to beat.

Sucks that it's Berdan primed.

I handload med velocity ball.
PPU is good,
Aguila sucks. Used Aguila in a competition, and maybe 10* had cycling issues. Later, found that those flash holes were only 1/2 open. I won't waste my time with it

The Malaysian shoots great in my 17S. The bi-metal isn't going to hurt your barrel.

Yes, this. Essentially the metal in your barrel is harder than the jacket. You're fine.

And yes, I forgot to mention the Malaysian stuff isn't reloadable...but that's not a problem for everyone.

I usually use privi partisan, but the PMC stuff SG ammo is selling is 42 cents per round and boxer primed. It’s pretty dirty, but shoots almost as well as the privi does.

I pretty much shoot surplus through mine unless I'm hunting with them. Everything so far runs fine in either gun. I try and shoot up my oldest stuff first then move onto the next case.
