Nice.  I'd like to put the M1A in a wooden stock.  And put a lightweight 16" bbl on it.

It looks like a Sikes replacement stock. You're going to need the stock liner, screws, and buttplate hardware. It's a score for $40.

Hopefully your Springfield will fit in the stock snugly. The newer ones sometimes have issues fitting correctly in older stocks. My SOCOM 16 had a big gap under the heel of the receiver, but my PolyTech M14S drops right in.

Is that Birch?

It would be fun to clean it up a little and see what it looks like with a new finish.

Looks like birch to me. If it’s fat in the wrist and fore end it may be what Fred’s M14 Stocks used to call a ‘Big Red’ stock.

The story goes that there was a bull named Big Red that lived near Fred, and that the beefy look of the stocks reminded him of the bull.

It didn't seem fat when I held it. I'll compare it to my m1a tomorrow

It won't feel National Match-fat, but the replacement stocks were beefed-up in places where the thinner stocks would sometimes break.

I dont know jack about M1A's other than I want one.

will the trigger group lock that down tight when installed?

otherwise I'd say see if you can figure out if it is rubbing anywhere, plus lay the stock on a flat surface to make sure it's flat on top.

Okay I finally got a chance to pull my M1A out of the safe. I laid the barreled action into the Old Stock and there is a gap underneath the heel. Any suggestions? The old stock looks just like the new wood the action came out of..https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/136887/20180513_183600-543216.jpg

That’s quite common with Springfield receivers, due to the differences between the original mil-spec and Springfield commercial factory specifications. I suggest going to M14forum and doing some reading, and I’m sure you’ll find the answer.

Too bad you’re so far away, as I’d trade you a GI fiberglass stock for it.

A free-floated receiver?

There are a few solutions that I saw from perusing the CMP Forums archive, but most of the advice is ‘have it fitted by a gunsmith familiar with M1 rifles/don’t start grinding on the stock’.

Sorry I’m not more helpful.

Try it with some loose shims under the flats on the trigger assembly.  If that draws it down into the receiver glue some permanent hardwood shims in the wood.  Stain to match.  Popsicle sticks are birch.

If it takes pressure to pull the rear down that is ok within reason.  You’re springing the barrel from the front ferrule which is good for accuracy and what is supposed to happen by design.

ETA the handguard were all fiberglass. No wood ones to match the stock except aftermarket.   The glass ones let the barrel cool better.

I have a box of handguard some where.  They’re not shiny and may have minor strain cracks.  No bands came with them but I have a dozen or so like that.   You can haz one for shipping.  They’re suitable as is or better with a fresh coat of ugly brown paint.  They’re not the premium shiny smooth brown SAInc used for years but they’re genuine usgi.

I have seen the pad area built up on garands in a horse shoe to fit.  It is doable.  I would also look inside the stock and see if it is contacting early by using ink or a wet marker (contact transfer) and see ifs a simple sand

It likely is the SA receiver that's out of spec. How does it shoot? If it's not exhibiting accuracy problems, there's no reason to worry about it. If it is, or if you want to fill the gap because it bothers you, have it bedded according to NM procedures. The old AMU accurizing guide is available on the net and covers the "horseshoe" rear bedding procedure quite well.

Good gawd, man ... just get out to the range and shoot that mofo.

Run it hard, just like they did in Korea and WW2.

Really??? Without the liner installed?  I would have bet against it.

I don't think they put Defence Acceptance Stamps on replacement stocks.  As far as I know, that only goes on when the gov't initially accepts a new, complete rifle.

He’s referring to the stock liner, which was absent in this photo. I’m guessing you installed one though, right?
