I am looking for a dedicated 223/5.56 can for a AR with a 16in barrel. I have a superlative gas piston kit on this barrel. The gas system is mid length.
I think this is a cliche question, but diameter, length, and weight do not really matter to me. I prefer performance over size and weight.
On paper I like the idea of the low backpressure design. Reading online I see conflicting info on if they are louder or not, and it seems it varies by make/model.
Seems they are quieter at the shooter ear, but slightly louder at the muzzle?
Shooting left handed, less gas out the ejection port is nicer. The piston kit helps with that too.

There are just a overwhelming number of 223/5.56 out there I just do not know where to start.
I have very very little first hand experience with a broad range of suppressors. So I am hoping people here who have been around lots of different models can help steer me towards a few specific models to start looking into.

This is most likely going to be direct thread and just live specifically on just this one rifle.  Not sure if that makes any difference or not, but I figured I would make note of the intent.

If I was going to put a suppressor on a 16" gun I'd go short and light.
The Hesychia 556 UK is a good suppressor for the money.
I may be biased as this is the newest suppressor I've got but I've emailed back and forth with the company and they're very responsive and friendly.
You would need a direct thread HUB mount though.
I ordered directly from them and got it shipped to my FFL.

Are there reasons you want direct thread and don't plan on using it on multiple rifles?

And size and weight will matter, IMO that should play heavily (no pun intended) in your choice.

I personally have Griffin cans, I think their taper mount system is one of the best out there.

I recently got a Griffin Explorr .224. Compared to my Griffin Alpha .30, the Explorr feels like there is nothing mounted on my rifle. I am really liking it. It comes with a taper mount muzzle device also. There are options to use it as a direct thread mount if you so choose.

Unless you are going to do mag dumps, get something in Ti.

On a 16” gun, you want the can to be light.

Direct thread not a bad idea at all, it will save some weight and length.

I would use a Ti DT mount to save another once.  It’ll only be another $40 or so.

As to length of the can on a 16” gun, I want it to be light.  I notice weight a lot more than I notice length of the can.
Having used  various cans on 16” guns, I do prefer shorter cans, but if you can live with a longer can, you will get less noise at the muzzle.

Having said that, leaving that can on the gun basicallly full time, a longer can will mean that longer rifle/can setup doesn’t fit into a rifle case, vehicle, safe, as well as a shorter setup.

Moving on -  you want a LPB can so you don’t have more noise at the ear.

I would look real hard at a Tisha in Ti.  They are LPB, very light, and excellent on sound.  And they are also short.

A friend has a Ekron.  It is a great performer.  ~1.5” longer than the Tisha.

I’ve been super happy with the Rhodie 6 Ti.  ~1” longer.

As the other gent suggested, the Hesychias are something to consider as well.  Def worth consideration.

I’m sure there are others.

Good luck with your choice.

My other AR's are set up for different various things and I do not need or want a suppressor on them.
I just want to dedicate one specific gun to suppressed use. So adding the extra parts to make it easily removable, and also buying the muzzle devices for all my other guns is of no interest to me.
It is also not a gun I am going to be carrying around the woods for hunting, so weight is not a concern. I do not have to worry about it fitting in a case, I have my own personal shooting range.

Our new Optimus 6AM is a great can for a lefty that wants really low signature.

A TBAC Spiro is another optIon.

Those are both more on the performance side of the spectrum for left hand shooters.

Been doing a little looking around and ran across this video.

The Best 5.56 Suppressor Comparison Video Ever! 24 Cans!

I watched it with some good quality headphones and I will say, that rhino S sounds very impressive.
Price is actually not as bad as I thought it would be too.

The Explorr is definitely not low back pressure. I have one, and while I like it I dont use it anymore since I got a Rhodie. LBP for the win. Seriously.

Left hand shooter here also...picked up a Griffin HRT5-AM..my first Griffin can...and just got done with a 5 day Patrol Rifle course...loved it...quiet..very little gas to the face even on the rapid fire stages.

That's really the objective of the HRT 5 AM the 5K AM and the Optimus 6AM (to provide a satisfactory experience for the left handed gas gun shooter.  That's a tough thing to do in a sound suppressor that doesn't compromise sound and flash reduction.   It's great to see left handed firers have a good shooting experience.

Outside of backpressure, looking plain, and not having a tool receiving feature for getting the mount on and off, nothing.  It's a pretty nice performing conventional pressure can.

If you really don't care about size and weight look into the CAT st. I think people are just now getting their hands on them so there's not a lot of feedback yet outside of influencers. It's supposed to really shine on longer barrels with adjustable gas. Not sure how back pressure is going to be since the pew test they used a mk18 and the numbers are kinda wacky. I was all set to get one when they came out but 17.5 Oz is an ouch.

Silencer Analytics tested both in the same video and for future videos dropped the Rhino while proclaiming the Rhodie a favorite. I got a Rhodie and love it. It’s obviously quieter than the RD LS5 which was the quietest at ear AND muzzle on the Mk18 at Silencer Summit 2023 of about 30 cans.

I've been shooting a taper mount explorr 224 for years and its been awesome. lightweight, sounds great, good flash suppression at night. Its been my go to can and usually my first recommendation. I'm left handed and do notice some gas especially with some hotter ammo.

I was hesitant to try anything else because I didn't want to use an adapter, add more length or weight. I just got an HRT5kAM and short plan a adapter. its about 3oz heavier, shorter (3/4" or about 1.5 explorr baffles), sounds just as good to my ear, and less to 0 gas in the face. I've only got 1 match (8 stages) of experience with it but I really like it. side note, one of my buddies was also shooting a gen1 turbok and fireballs were impressive in a bad way.

I'd say if you're doing long hikes and minimal shooting, get the explorr. classes or matches or lefty, HRT. I'd do the K version, as length/weight are priority to me.

It's hard to buy a 'bad' can designed on the past year or so.  Stop chasing DB's and look at other features as well.. Tisha and Rhodie are both highly rated.  Griffin was just tested by Silencer Analytics and came out in the top few, I have several ECCO cans thar are great, and of course TBAC has awesome products.  Can't go wrong with CAT (despite their marketing).

Dillon and PTR vent if you don't mind hanging a telephone pole on the end of your gun,  SIG hexium are rated good.  Watch some Juicy Media and SIlencer Analytics video, pick a mount solution (or direct mount).  Figure out what's important (weight, length, tone, DB's etc...)

I have both inconel Rhodies, FireTeam 556 and an inconel Tisha. The Tisha wins out over both Rhodies and the Fireteam 556.

6k is dedicated to my 10.5” SBR FRT build
6 ended up dedicated to my Geissele 18” 6 ARC Stratomatch because it shit stomps my CAT Noah
Tisha is dedicated to my factory HK 556 A4 SBR
FireTeam is dedicated to my factory 10.5” LWRC SBR with an FRT

I’m trying to base my decisions on the whole can and not just sound, but the Tisha is the complete package for me. I have some more SBR’s I need to play musical cans with, but the Tisha is staying on the HK.

I was told at SHOT by ATI <metal producer that landrush sales of turbine engines had incredible pressure on inconel powder supply lines.  I've been down 4 times this year in production waiting for powder from our US provider.  I've been told the entire time that they are "catching up" but the delivery dates show they are getting progressively more late.  We haven't had a suppressor inventory problem yet related to powder, but we are not far away from potentially running into that.  So I'm hoping we get delivered powder soon.

I spoke to Renishaw about it and was told many customers are having issues with supply.  The tariff situation has put strain on manufacturing, as that pushed some people toward US material vendors who were formerly not buying locally, and even US atomizers may have partners for ingots and stuff like that- for example I don't think we currently mine cobalt in the US.  There are always strategically important things that we import like rubber- despite that we successfully fought WWII.  Trump essentially claims to have sold a lot of aircraft, and he created issues in supply of powdered nickel alloys via those sales and his tariffs.  The aircraft consume incredible amounts of powder via dated FAA certified processes like making ingots for subtractive manufacturing from powdered metal.  <this is incredibly inefficient as a process- and requires vast amounts of atomization capacity to support.

This myth that American manufacturing can just be jumpstarted in a minute is a false narrative pushed by people who are either incredibly stupid, or incredibly disingenuous.  The US Government has only beaten people up to buy American (tariff/tax, trade witch-hunts etc)- they haven't been helping industry in other ways like subsidizing strategic production of facilities to support expansion of material commodity production, or pushing manufacturing as the objective jobs for patriotic young people.  Rather they have been talking about AI replacing all work.  <another lie- and a narrative that doesn't support manufacturing labor development.

China is the major tungsten provider to the world.  Carbide is used to cut all metal things, and it is alloyed into aerospace materials, and the administration has been successful in provoking China to 2-6X increase the carbide prices, which is an example of another force that hurts US manufacturing growth.  This impacts the price of cutting tools from every company regardless of where they are located.  They keep pretending that harming things like Oil prices does not negatively impact the economy.  It's a fairy tale.  The economy is a machine that operates best when all the knobs are precisely tuned to perfection.

The best 5.56 cans on the market today are the Tisha, Rhodie 6, 6K, and 6J, and maybe the CAT ST or CACM.

Tisha is the winner on flat out sound it has zero back pressure. Rhodies are right behind it but way, way cheaper. The aforementioned CAT cans are solid options but very hard to recommend at their cost to performance index.

"best" depends on what performance areas you care about, and is going to be different for everyone.

For me, for a 5.56 can, what I care about is, in order:
1. Flash performance 2. Length 3. Weight 4. Backpressure 5. Sound

And of course the can needs to be durable enough for the type of shooting I am doing or its a non starter.

I was really interested in the Tisha but it looks terrible on flash. Even the inconcel version is very sparky.

The Rhodie 6 and 6K were high on the list but the Griffin HRT5K edged them out for me. It has the same length as the 6K while being 2oz lighter and the blast baffle is .25" longer, so if I got the 6K I would need an extra long hub adapter for the muzzle devices I like to use. I should be picking it up this week, and I think it will be a nice do-all can for my various 5.56s.

Hoping Griffin comes out with a reasonably light/short can that prioritizes flash and is direct Plan A mounting in the future. That would be sweet for a short barrel build. The confusingly named "Dual Lok Hub" might be the answer but I haven't seen enough proper flash tests yet to say.

Also haven't seen much testing on the newer CAT cans, but they seem to make great products. Some like the KK are very muzzle device restrictive which is a big turn off for me.

Everyone certainly has their priorities, I agree.

Regarding flash, thats not very cut and dry. Flash will absolutely depend on barrel length, muzzle device, bullet weight, powder, charge weight, and ambient conditions...and all combinations there of. Your perception of flash will vary wildly on top of that depending on illumination and whether or not you are viewing with your eyes only or under nods. Additionally, many people comment on a DLMS can's flash performance when it is brand new and still full of combustible powder from the print. It takes a while for that to burn off and flush out. I am not defending the tisha with this statement, this is a generalized statement for suppressors.

I say all that to support the statement that there are videos floating around that appear to show what we understand to be good flash performers lighting up the night sky, but we dont have context always on rifle setup, load, round count, etc. Etc.

The video you are referencing for the tisha is one on reddit. Ive seen it. There are also multiple on YouTube showing the opposite:

This video shows the titanium Tisha with pretty solid performance on an 11 inch MR556

I have no personal experience with the Griffin, but it sounds like a great option. I also really dont love the CAT cans dependency on specific MD's, but i can appreciate the extra effort taken in R&D to identify that at the same time.

I am not married to any of these cans, I am just saying that this stuff is incredibly nuanced.

yep you clocked me on that one Reddit vid of the inconel Tisha.

Totally agree that flash "test" results are all over the place. There are so many variables that it is hard to compare the results of different suppressors shot by different content creators. On the other hand a lot of it is due (IMO) to half-assed testing: low frame rates, not shooting under NODs, not shooting when its very dark, not having a good angle, etc.

That Silencer Analytics vid is a great example of all these issues... he's giving his opinion from behind the gun rather than an eye looking from downrange, hes only firing 2 shots per can, only firing 1 ammo type on 1 host, no NODs, no different angles....

These vids are the absolute best I've seen and pretty much the only ones worth watching as far as serious flash testing vids:

CAT Kitty Kat - Flash Suppression Series Episode 16

If anything the above tests have the opposite issue from all the other ones: they show the flash so well that everything looks kinda bad. But I would FAR prefer that vs not seeing how flashy a can actually can be. If you watch that series you will get an idea of how big a difference something as simple as the framerate makes to how the flash comes across on video.

Just from my own personal experience I've been amazed at how much flashier cans are when I'm watching my friends shoot under NODs, compared to the hyped up performance I thought I would see after watching "flash test" vids on the same cans, or from my own experience being behind the gun.

I actually think these are good options. I think the AR is a little tricky to supress and the end use will massively change what supressor you use. A little a turbo K, Polo or ECCO 5x5 gives you small inexpensive 5.56 can for you to use and figureout what strengths and weakness are important to you.

A 18"proof barrel AR used for coyote hunting needs to be a lightweight short ti can. But a 18 barrel never leaving the range bench might as well be a long heavy steel can and save the money and durability. Or do you only ever shoot your 16" rifle at a indoor range? That means you will never shoot it without ear pro except in an emergency. Why bother chasing the last few decibel in that scenario. I honestly dont think every need case benefits from a super high performance can. Some of the little $500 K cans work just fine.
