Officially starting my project to SBR a new Mini 14 Tactical (the Stainless Folder, A-Team style) (Page 1 of 3)

... had never had any whatsoever interest into the Mini 14 for most of my life. All of it actually, none. Then someone posted weeks ago something about a new Mini 14 - the 50th Anniversary, and I bought it. Now I really like these new ones - the Anniversary and, just discovered, the Stainless Tactical with the folder - I believe it was launched in 2024. I noticed it can be a great basis for an SBR. So I am launching this project (for me, here). Bought already my first component, the Samson's gas-block iron sight (since by cutting the barrel, the sight goes). Final look will be as in these pictures - typical of what used to be called - still called - the Mini AC556, the short barreled, full auto version. Just fucking sexy and another piece of Americana I really want. Couple of videos of current Mini 14s SBR'd and a couple of pictures. I'll keep this updated for fun ![]() The Mini-14 SBR of My Dreams-AC-556 Perfection! ![]() THE Mini-14 SBR An actual AC556 ![]() Ruger AC556 | The A-Team Guns Samson's gas block sight (stainless) Attached File ... examples of what it will look like (unsuppressed images here) Attached File Attached File |

Though I just cut the barrel to 12.5" and moved the sight block back to in front of the gas block. I had to shorten the back side of the sight about 1/4" then just pinned it back on. https://imgur.com/I64BtvU.jpg https://imgur.com/uyoBNlB.jpg UNSURE yet if I will do the cutting and threading by myself - as I don't have the tools. Only self assembled AR15s so far, with already at-length barrels. Full assembly but no threading, cutting - I may just go (likely) with my friend (certified Gunsmith) here in Sarasota who's already cut and threaded barrels for me. In addition to this, there are stories of cracked receivers while attempting to remove barrels (to cut and thread) - hence, again, will probably quickly drop it off 20 minutes from here and 'get her done'. PS the thought of being able to swap stocks quickly and get it looking like yours - a la ranch - in minutes is just sweet. Originally Posted By TNC: This is relevant to my interests. I love the Short AC556 and did a Blued SBF from a LEO/Corrections surplus GB that was in good shape and an Original Ruger folder which was expensive - before they made the new repros. I watched the A-team but not a fan of those guns which look like Mall Ninja from the 80s guns. I love the original GB, and AC556 versions, especially the shortened ones. I first some them used by a local police SWAT team in the 80s and thought it looked good. Much later in life I wanted one but didn't pay out for a Full auto and made an SBR. My Thread on it is here in the archives. https://www.ar15.com/forums/armory/Mini-14-SBR-Project-Somewhat-Retro/52-492241/ I cut mine, threaded it 1/2x28 vs the oddball thread Ruger used and added the gas block top front sight |

Has anyone seen the Samson A-TM stock, in, uh stock? I put in for email notifications at several places but so far I haven't found one. My mini is from ca. 1995 and I'd like to get that classic a-team look Regarding 300 BO, I currently have an AR pistol in 300 BO which fills a niche for a small rifle to carry in the woods. It brings the possibility of mixing up 5.56 and 300 BO. An SBR mini in 300 BO would sure make a handy woods gun, and the mags would make it less likely I'd mix up ammo. |
I know I'll never go home.
So set fire to your ships, and past regrets, and be free.

Samson Folding Stock @TNC ETA if you buy it, please come back here with pictures to show it. I am going to love it if this thread ends up being a laude to the 1980s Mini 14 revival. That's what I mean to do with mine. |

If Ruger were actually one of the cool kids they'd offer a Mini 14 pistol like they do the 10/22 Charger, and make this a hell of a lot easier for everyone. As for the Samson stocks, I ordered a B-TM stock on their website back in the summer and it took about 3 months for them to fill the order. Not that that correlates to the A-TM stock availability, but I think outside of waiting and hoping the only guaranteed way to get one is to place a backorder and wait. |

Not that that correlates to the A-TM stock availability, but I think outside of waiting and hoping the only guaranteed way to get one is to place a backorder and wait. At first, right after buying my (new) 50Th Anniversary Mini 14, I realized I also wanted a folder and I DID place a backorder with Samson for the folder stock only (not realizing it seemed to be in stock at Ruger's) My backorder has been cancelled by them and funds released (they do lock funds on credit cards and won't charge until it ships). This reinforced my idea to just get a full new rifle (the "Tactical" stainless folder) and work my way to an SBR from there. Too iconic not to have; plus rather different from the 50th Anniversary - reposting images of my recently acquired one here (pretty accurate too with that Trijicon Credo scope) lower scope rings by Solo__, on Flickr Mini 14 50th Anniversary Vietnam M1 Sling by Solo__, on Flickr |

I have one of the new stainless 18" folder Minis. Its ok. I wish it came with 30 round mags instead of 2 20's though. Stainless 30's not made by Promag can be harder to find at times, and still might not be better than the Blomags. I SBR'ed my 10/22 clone with a Samson stock purely because I wanted the AC556 look without the hassle of barrel cutting or swapping on a Mini. It scratches the itch for me, but Samson really seems to trickle out their stocks and I think they are prioritizing their relationship with Ruger. |

I believe there'a blued 30 rounds magazine for sale at Ruger's (original Ruger 30 rounders) - I'll buy it when the time comes to complete the look Blued Mini 14 30 round magazine ETA wanted to add that, like you, I'd love a 20 or 30 round stainless magazine NOT from a third party and NOT nickeled - just stainless - I think it would sell really well. |

OP - If you are reasonably good with tools and a file, you can cut, re-crown, thread a barrel with tools from Brownells and CNC warrior if you look under CNC warrior's barrel threading page. Essentially you cut the barrel and re-crown with hand tools and reamers from Brownells. CNC Warrior sells special annular cutters with a centering bit and it cuts the OD of the barrel to what size you need to hand- thread with a die. You use a bore threading guide to get started and you can have an SBS. Now it may not be perfectly concentric, But I use a 30 cal can on my 223 and it works so If there is error, I don't see it in any strikes maybe due to wider bore but maybe you can do similar. |

Am just a few hundreds away from clicking on buy now on the actual rifle (Gunbroker has many, it'll be one of those). Once that happens, I get it home and everything - I will make the final decision (on this) AND update here. It's just so much fun. For now, watching as many movies that have a Mini 14 in them as possible. Again for me it is mainly all meant as Americana - a cultural aspect of the country I love the most in the world. |

I love the look of the A team mini and always have. I owned one mini 14 I bought as a joke (didn’t run at a match and I offered the guy $50 for it. He accepted!). It ended up being a rare bull barrel version I traded off once I fixed it. Have not been in the game for a while but mags were expensive and the metal stock looks cool but I imagine not fun to shoot. Following for inspiration. |

Early on I'm my membership here I bought 2 barrels off the EE - one 9mm, one 5.56. Both were ban era barrels that had been threaded by hand - crookedly. I bought a linear comp and sample pointed out there was a visible angle. The 5.56 barrel ended up with a flash can, mounted on one of my groomsmen's rifle. |

I have mentioned to Ruger Reps at various trade shows that the Mini needs a "pistol" version and the look I get is - like "What? Why? there are so many AR Pistols and the Mini fulfills a niche for mostly people not wanting pistols in 5.56 and live in Fudd states" ???? I can't believe Many out there would not be interested It doesn't seem like a big investment to swap barrels cut a stock and put a 1913 rail on it or? |

Yes - the Ban era had lots of ass backwards garage attempts at re-doing barrels sometimes good sometimes not. I used a bore guide to check mine - it works well for me but again its luck and skill. If wanting to shoot a Mini Supressed its best to do it right. |

If anyone at Ruger is reading this thread, I have absolutely zero intent to ever buy another Mini 14/30. Never ever ever. Not going to happen. BUT... If Ruger releases a FACTORY Mini 14/30 PISTOL as described above... I'm a buyer. And if Ruger is still reading this thread: Nobody really wants a Mini 14, it is kind of a tool of last resort now. Even people in ban states will buy other neutered AR's or similar before buying a Mini 14. One, because there are a LOT of cheaper options now. And two, because even farmers use ARs. The days of the wood stocked "critter getter" died with the greatest generation and boomers. Gen X and younger want ARs and AR adjacent clones. The people still buying Minis are buying them more out of nostalgia and cloning than anything else... and a large part of that nostalgia / cloning is the AC556. Most want them from the A-Team, but older Gen X like me want an AC556 because of Miami Vice. Jim Zubiena in Calderone's Return with that AC556 was badass, and I'd love to have a blued factory AC556 clone with provision for a side folder to accompany my stainless factory Mini 14 tactical. But Ruger, just keep doing whatever you want. I'm sure it is very comfortable and safe back there in 1982, and I imagine the second you started selling a Ruger branded AR the ghost of Bill Ruger clutched his ghostly chest and wheezed in pain. |

No pictures though. For what it’s worth, this setup fits well in some tennis racket cases, and is the shortest non-SBR length Mini you can get. The standard ones and threaded ones have a longer OAL. It’s my travel rifle. With 20 round mags, it hides easily, and with the Ultimak/accessory rail space added, even with the WML and RDS it’s nice and compact. And the SS makes maintenance considerably less demanding in varied climates. It’s surprisingly hard to find the 16” non-threaded rifle to get that shorter OAL. |

Attached File Brand new unfired Tactical series that I had cut down to 12.5”. I dropped of another Tactical series last week to my gunsmith for a 2nd build. 12.5” is super handy, especially with a folder. Still trying to decide how I want to go as far as an optic for it. |

By the way, the "Mini 14" bug has hit. I want the whole spectrum of looks now, hence I bought an older stock on eBay. Lighter colored wood with the arched shoulder butt - which my 50th Anniversary lacks completely (rubber) and a longer LOP (on the 50th). By the way, guys - I checked Youtube. While still a rare thing(SBRing), there maybe a resurgence of Minis some of which in fact, SBR'd - I am seeing guys cutting and threading and adding suppressors. With the future, hypothetical abolition of the 200$ tax to SBR, many more people could decide to go that direction - not even counting a possible, future repeal of the NFA I understand it may be a little gassed will see New to me old stock I just bought, Attached File ETA @RONIN45, what do you think (if any) of the difference between 12.5 inches and 13? Do you know anything about it? Does it make any difference whatsoever? |

I've had interest in the Mini for a long time, gen X, never watched Miami Vice, A-Team, etc. It was always an alternative to the AR-15, but has gotten stupidly high at wholesale to fleece the poor folks in occupied territory. My excuse to get one was as a travel rifle w/ 10 round mag, red dot on a forward pic rail, & stripper clip guide, b/c 21x steel 10 round mags would be dumb. Finally one came across the table for $500 and I bit. Needs a 181+ series wood stock, red dot, & the stripper clip guide. |

ETA: don't forget GI Tech sights. I am fearing installation because of all the horror stories I am seeing - even people using their solder iron on the screw to warm up the loctice won't work - the screw gets stripped and you have to go to your gunsmith to get it removed - install the new sight. I think I am going to wait for the stainless steel rifle to get here (still waiting on a specific credit card for this purchase, should be this week) then once I formed-one, I'll take it to my gunsmith (friend) and I'll have him do both cutting the barrel and installing the (Tech) sight on that rifle. It's a process - and it's definitely part of the fun. @Seven-Shooter |

What you just showed there was the earlier version of Samson's folder. It was a lighter shade of brown - sort of birch-ish. That'd be in line with the earlier, original ones from Ruger (AC556s were largely in that lighter shade). Contemporary Samson folders are a darker brown. I find myself liking the lighter shade now ![]() |

I dropped of another Tactical series last week to my gunsmith for a 2nd build. 12.5” is super handy, especially with a folder. Still trying to decide how I want to go as far as an optic for it. Love it! Reminds me of a Reising M50. |

They were very blonde and sourced supposedly by a vendor in Italy but walnut. Walnut is photo-sensitive and it will darken with age but it wasn't what I expected. It looks good, but could have been better. Again it is perhaps awkward sad that I expected that Classic 80s Ruger false Walnut look a "cheap" thinly surfaced stained walnut Birch stock. It was an attempt at an upgrade from a supplier, so I think its good. I actually bought a 10-22 Samson stock as well and modified it to fit on an M-1 Carbine - that was too dark |

FYI - My Factory magazine that appears Stainless was a blued factory mag that was a used LEO mag. I disassembled it and painted it with Rustoleum Stainless Steel Appliance paint - the kind you find at Home Depot. Matched almost perfect, has held up years with only a little wear - You would think it was stainless! If you want a matching color mag - might want to try this Mini-14 hack. |

People are amazed that it can hit things that well despite the Ruger reputation. Its not a long range Varmint gun - don't really care about that level of precision. https://hosting.photobucket.com/19e4745a-66b9-4c05-ac38-2a30c200ea6d/8e321ed9-9dc8-4310-8193-52b4cc083953.jpg Like, I can't even understand why I hadn't been interested in this before? What's wrong with me - type of thing. It's just evidently fascinating, as the traditional (improved upon, especially with the now more common among us SBR concept - as short barreled rifles become more common, popular and allowed thanks to easier eForms procedures and processes) rifle that one re-discovers. It has the modern flavor of the shorter, handier rifle It has the mythical attraction of the un-accessible (now and then) AC556 full auto version of a past in which we grew up in It has the desirable wood AND steel in an age of plastics It has the classic action of the rifles of America that won multiple conflicts (WWII semi-autos) it's relatively inexpensive ... and I couldn't care less about accuracy (always been a center mass kind of guy) In addition to this, current reissues seem to have mitigated the accuracy via thicker barrels; and I'll chop it regardless. All in all, can't wait |
