And Victor, do you offer any "hand select" option on the PVS-14, or the option of blem free tubes (for say those looking into photography) or higher S/N?

Thanks again,

Hi Edwin,

The variable gain is a nice feature in an urban environment where porch lights and street light cause a haloing effect.  Turning the gain down on the PVS-14 helps decrease this halo effect as well as seeing into the shadows a bit better by dimming down the ambient surrounding light.  The MUM does have ABC=Automatic Brightness Control that helps with this, but it's not as effective in brighter porch light scenerios.  The MUM really shines with the hand-select tube option in the rural environments with its average higher signal to noise rations and gain.  Both units have comparible IR illumintors that have a range of around 18 feet in very dark environments.

There is no (official) hand-select tube otpions on the PVS-14's, nor data cards....But when I do have a large stock of 14's on-hand, customers do pay a bit extra for me to go view into each one to pick out the best in stock.

Also Bp_968,  The replacement cost for a new tube in a PVS-14 is around 1800.00 or so.  I've NEVER had to replace or repair one yet.  Hope this helps.

I run an Aimpoint in a LT RAS II mount with a GG&G high PVS 14 mount.

They line up perfectly on my RAS II and there is plenty of room for a rear BUIS.  I use a KAC 300m.

Thanks Z., I was looking into the GG&G as a matter of fact, especially after Vic's post.... I was puzzled by the fact that there's no way to adjust height, i.e. either "hi" or "lo" mounts aval.
Actually, thinking about it, what is missing is a "half" spacer for the ARMS similar to their Aimpoint mount... which I dont have anybody knows if it would work with the PVS14 AMS mount?

Again thanks everyone!

Victor, or anyone else, I'm someone who is about to jump into his first Gen 3 night vision device, how would you compare the Mil-Spec PVS-14 + Mil-Spec magnifier with EO Tech/Aimpoint vs a D-760 Gen 3 rifle scope?
The versatility of a 1X monocular is obvious, but with it's matching 3X magnifier what are it's long range capabilities?
Do they even approach the ability of a dedicated 4X or 6X night Gen 3 nightvision scope?
What kind of range are we talking about for engaging varmint & man sized targets with the use of the 3X magnifier, and how about target identification?

Many thanks for any reply.

Hi Edwin,

The dedicated NV rifle scopes such as the D-760 as you mentioned has a 6x magnification vs. the 3x Mil-Spec. Thus, you WILL see a much further with the 6x of course. The 6x will give you around 475m man-size recognition, the 4x around 350m.  The mil-spec magnifier through the EO Tech should yield around 200m recognition range. Note this is recognition range.  I have engaged man-size steel plates at 600m with the D-760 and my 6.8 SPC.

The ability of seeing a small varmint such as a coyote in PERFECT conditions, i.e., no tall weeds, forests, etc....Another words recognition on wide open shot with a 760 should yield 300+, a 740 at 200+ and a mil-spec 3x around 150+.  (These are conservative figures as well) A 1x monocular around 100m for small varmints.  Once again these examples are based on optimum conditions.  This also includes a high performance Gen 3 ITT tube as well.

As for a 3x magnifier approaching the capabilities of a dedicated NV riflescope, it competes at 100-150m after that, the dedicated rifles scopes leads the way in clarity, brightness and resolution. Hope this helps.

Vic, many thanks for the reply.
Your information pretty much confirms what I expected to hear.
However, the 3X on the monocular does increase it's utility it seems.

But I certainly will be contacting you in the near future for a Gen 3 D-760 or a monocular.

Again, many thanks

What is the TCO (total cost of ownership) on these PVS14s?  What are typical repair costs? Whats a tube replacement cost?

Thanks!

WOW.  Great thread that answered a lot of questions.

However, I have some more.

Early on it was mentioned that the raptor and the 760 whatever what citizens can buy were rated for up to 50 caliber rifles.  Does this mean they can be mounted on a 50bmg rifle and handle the recoil?

Any short lifespans expected from this?  I don't plan to do it but I believe that is what I read so I wanted to see if there are limits placed on these.  And actually, any limits on the pvs-14 or whatever you can mount on an ar15 behind an aimpoint and e-o-tech?

I have another question I did not see in this thread either.

If I am odd enough to spend all my money on a rifle accurate enough to bother shooting at 600 yards or more and a night vision scope that can go to that range, what do I do during the day time?

I reckon most of the daytime will be for me to go work at a job to pay the bills since I spent all my savings on a varmint rifle for night use.

But can you use these scopes in the daytime?  Maybe this is a newb question, and I admit I have not read any other threads yet since I just read this entire thread first.

But since I am a newb who might be selling his house I might be needing to actually know these answers.

Thanks for the info in this thread, it is great seeing where things are right now and I learned a lot.

Indeed, they can be mounted on a .50cal weapon with NO problems at all and no life span shortages.

I would NOT reccommend any calibers higher than a 6.8 with either the PVS-14 or the MUM.

Go to work to work as you sstated below to pay for the high-end gear!

I reckon most of the daytime will be for me to go work at a job to pay the bills since I spent all my savings on a varmint rifle for night use.

Indeed!

But can you use these scopes in the daytime?  Maybe this is a newb question, and I admit I have not read any other threads yet since I just read this entire thread first.

No, not at all. A dedicated NVD should NEVER be used during the day. You WILL fatally damage the tube AND void the warranty!  You can use the day cover for limited use. I try to limit this type of day cover use to indoors and/or overcast days and only for short durations.

But since I am a newb who might be selling his house I might be needing to actually know these answers.

LOL, you selling your house to buy high-end NVD's? NICE!

Hello to everyone! Great thread BTW... I got a small question to ask to the NV Gurus here.

I have a RAS II mounted on my M4gery, on top of the "bump" I installed a Aimpoint M2 using an ARMS Tripower low profile mount (got that cause they were out of the M68 mount... works OK just the same, only maybe a mm higher).

On the FT I also put an ARMS 40L BUIS... I have a nice PVS14Delta and before adding the RAS II used the original GI weapons mount, both for the Aimpoint and the PVS14. Everything was dead on... now, I cannot any more use the PVS, I did try the ARMS29, but it does not work, too off center, what can I do?

OK here they are... here's the setup:

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/646/1a2jf.jpg

and here's a detail with the problem. I will sell the Arms mount shortly, since I cannot use it, I want to have clearance for the BUIS...

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/3984/2a6vu.jpg

so what i'm asking is... what is out there that will allow me to maintain my BUIS, use my PVS14 and be in line with the Aimpoint?

[Last Edit: Victor][Edited] [#15]
What does the Field of view look like? (Where is the dot located when looking through the PVS-14?)  Is a height issue? Form what you're showing me, the AP dot should be fine.  Some folks like the 14 a bit higher to decrease the shadowing effect of the AP body housing.

In closing, it looks as if the KAC "bump" is the root cause of this? If all else fails you might have to remove the spacer from the #29 and go without the BUIS.  I think even going with the GG&G multi-flex mount and ring would still put the 14 too high for your AP if that is indeed in question. Here is the GG&G setup.

I think it outperforms the Aimpoint 3X magnifier.  There's also NO light loss I saw using the Mil-Spec PVS-14 magnifier glass and no body housing obstruction at all.

Guys,
I need some guidance, I'm trying to decide between goggles and a monocular. In reading the forum there seems to be a bias towards the monocular, which I assume is related to a desire to weapons mount the device. While weapons mounting is cool, it not my primary nvd use. I see myself using NV more for operating vehicles at night - quads, snowmobile, boating, getting to and from the hunting blind/fishing hole,. I would expect that I'd be wearing the head gear for hours at a time - my major concern is that using "one eye" for long periods of time would get tiresome. I'm leaning towards the PVS14, based on the lighter weight and better resolution than the top of the line goggles - but can't seem to get passed the two eyes are better than one thing. Can anyone with experience give guidance?

As for weapons mounting/usage, I plan on using the NV with an Aimpoint(out to about 100yrds) without weapons mounting the device. I understand that using an  IR laser will get me around many of the optics issues discussed on this thread.

Thanks,
JJ

Hi JJ,

Over the last several years I've dealt with a great many folks that included LE, military and commercial users on PVs-7's over monoculars, i.e. one eye vs. two.  I can tell you from my own personal experience I find that using one eye for the monocular is a great asset.  For LE work it’s obvious that one eye open = increased officer safety concerns dramatically.  All the LE's I consult with have dropped the PVS-7's.  The military has also been realizing this for quite some time. This was the biggest reason we have NOT seen PVS-7’s in production for quite some time.  (they might be again on a short run, not confirmed though.)  The PVS-14's and MUM’s have been purchased in huge quantities over the last two years and will continue.  The other big advantage of having the other eye open IMHO is the huge increase in depth perception vs. having both eyes in the tube.  Early on if you remember, there was a great many military A/C mishaps due to NOD’s and depth perception errors while the pilots employed the goggle systems.  This brings me to your point on you mentioned that you will be navigating moving vehicles. Again, I strongly recommend you leave one eye open for safety issues of the vehicle your negotiating.   As for eye fatigue, I personally have worn my 14’s or MUM’s for over a 5 hour uninterrupted period and I felt no fatigue. The ONLY thing I would have been fatiqued with if I was wearing the supplied “skull-crusher” head-harness.  Get the Bell helmet and a GI NVD mount.

As for employing a laser…Good point you bring up….I hardly EVER use my EO’s any longer.  At  night I routinely shoot from the ready and let my laser do ALL talking at 100m!  I can do this all the while why using my open eye to scan for other targets of opportunity.

Hope this helps, if you need any further help, drop me a line as I would be happy to assist.

I REALLY like the Development Programs Section.  The COBRA system looks VERY interesting, BUT VERY large in size.  I am sure this has been shrunk in size a bit since the prototype.  Also their Ultra Light Thermal Weapon Sight for CQB work also looks VERY good. This is THE smallest thermal unit I've seen.  Looks as this was delivered in 2002.

Me to on the D-760 it will have to wait until the bonus check in spring though

Question for the board - I have heard that the use of a GG&G type PVS 14 mount will void the warranty from ITT... true? I can't find any specific prohibitions in the literature supplied by ITT.

I take it you're referring to the ring feature of this particuliar mount.  Larue also uses this type of ring mounting system.  While I've always had a slight concern mounting a ring onto a lens system, I've never heard of any ITT warranty issue.  Hope this helps.

The LaRue does NOT mount on the the lens ring itself, it mounts just behind it.

It's a tight squeeze, but I don't see how it's going to damage anything

the GG&G also mounts behing the obective lens on the body of the PVS-14. It is not a split ring - only has one cut for a socket bolt.

Some still mount this way. Bottom pic.

Vic

Btw, I think the  reason they move the ring up on the lens is to insure the helmet mount adapter will fit while weapon mounted.   The GG&G PVS-14 ring will allow the adapter to fit while the ring is backed all the way onto the body housing ring (just behind the lens as you pointed out).  I'll post some pics shortly of this.

bigbadBUSHmstr1,

Im running a MUM behind an Eotech 552 and I love it! I would go with a MUM or PVS-14, the versitility of weapon to head mount is great.

The Magnification of the D-760 would be nice though. Im working on my mid length build right now, so I'll pick one of those up from Victor soon, but I first need to get my hands on a magpul PRS :)

For the love of god will they give us a Night Vision section on this forum already?!

i'm looking for a good set up to use with eotech 552. just wondering which would be more compatiable; weapon mounted or goggles? i just don't like the idea of having the weapon shouldered all the time, so i think that goggles would be better suited. but i'm just not sure. my budget is about $3,000.00 any info would be appreciated.

If you're using a 552, its better advised using a monocular behind the 552.  It's a bit difficult cheek welding goggles as you peer behind the EO Tech.  It CAN be done, just a bit uncomfortable.  The most important fact I feel is to have your other eye open looking at other targets, while the goggle gives you no peripheral vision to perform this.

If you like to shoot from the ready, ditch the 552, get yourself a IR laser, attach a monocular to your head and then point and shoot while letting your laser do ALL the talking!   This is a very quick and accurate (out to 75-100yds) way to shoot at night as well.  Hope this helps.

Goggles:
(relatively) Inexpensive - You can get a grade A MUM2 for a little more than your $3k mark.
Versatile - a MUM2 is handheld or head, helmet and weapon mountable.  As Vic mentioned, it is challenging to use a head/helmet mounted goggle with another optic.  The difficulty lies in getting them lined up and negates the quickness associated with red dots.  Add a taboo ~$1k-$2k IR laser for speed.  (note: beware of stolen GI property)
Short range - Adequate for carbines

Scope:
Inexpensive - A D-740 is near the $3k mark.
Medium range - Better results gets you beyond the carbine and into rifle range.
Limited application - You have to point your weapon at anything you want to see.

I see you flapping your arms at me.  A $3+k goggle, $3k scope and $1k laser?  Yikes!
