Picked up a home-brew camo painted forearm.
Great shape but there is wear and "hot" spots near the gas block & receiver
Want to return it to standard or mil-spec black,
to match my Spikes upper & lower.

I have taken hot soap with a green pad and cleaned the rough spots,
but at the same time exposed the base frame.
Had thought about brake cleaner, but I'm just going to paint it.

Not looking for any custom camo colours, Also no complicated process,

What brand and color suggestions?

PS: Has anyone ever used oven cleaner??

Thanks

Break cleaner or non-acetone polish remover

Found a little gem.

The US Army has released a letter:

"Maintenance Information Message 10-040"

Notes for Soldiers – Weapons Painting 101,  On 1 April, TACOM Life Cycle Management Command issued the Maintenance Information Message MI 10 - 040 “Camouflaging Specific Small Arms” stating that, given command approval, Soldiers are permitted to camouflage the M4/M16 weapon systems with paint. In essence,  MI 10-040 is the Army’s “Weapons Painting 101” textbook.  http://www.peosoldier.army.mil/docs/blog/weaponspainting101.pdf

MI 10-4040 suggests:

Spray Paint – Available through GSA (www.gsaadvantage.gov)
o Black (1916830)
o Khaki (1917830)
o Earth Brown (1918830)
o Deep Forest Green (1919830)
o Army Green (1920830)

The reference number for black matches the Rust-Oleum 1916830 Camouflage Spray, Black

Might not be permanent or pretty or expensive, but Mother Army says just do it.. :]

I’d llook at Aervoe.  They have a larger range of colors and in my experiences hold up better than rust oleum or krylon

Yup, aervoe is what you want. Holds up like a champ and won’t break the bank. If you can’t score any then I’d default to krylon camo which you can find pretty much anywhere.

Aervoe has a flat black in their Camo line.  Regardless of whoever yo go with, there will be some shade variances between parts ( unless you paint the entire rifle )
