That Springfield rifle looks to be one of the sliding bayonet types that were manufactured during the early 1880's. If so, that is an excellent acquisition of a a rather rare U.S. martial long arm. Good find!.

Springfield is an 1888 rod bayo is a dead giveaway.
Just picked one up awhile back. Make sure to pull it from the stock and check for any corrosion.

They are very cool rifles I haven't shot mine yet.

Awesome stuff.  I have an M1884 (1888) inbound to me arriving today or tomorrow, 1891 production.  The 1888's aren't the really rare rod bayonet prototypes, but still comparatively fewer in number.

If you don't mind my asking, what'd he give for it and where did he find it?
