I know it is not camouflage. Recently I have noticed people at the range wearing it. I assumed "fashion statement" or "LE" but when asked they stated it stays cleaner than other lighter colors (multicam and tan were specifically mentioned) for competition and "looks better than plain black". Logic checks out. Your thoughts? |

I would say it's about 80% fashion statement, but in an urban setting with low illumination it actually does pretty good. If black or real dark gray will work, black multicam will as well but will just look better and cost more![]() ROCK6 |

If black or real dark gray will work, black multicam will as well but will just look better and cost more ![]() ROCK6 I remember thinking I was "upgrading" my OD ALICE gear back around '87 when I found black ALICE at the local Army Surplus Store. We would hike in gear most weekends so it did not take long to realize black gear stands out in woodland even at midnight. However, I do see some value in multicam black over pure black strictly from a "it is technically camo" stand point. Especially in an urban or HD setting. It definitely looks a lot better than pure black. Maybe I'll get something in MCB to test. I'm pretty much out of the hobby at this point, but I've been testing camo for over 40 years and still enjoy that aspect of it. |
|
I guess I'm old enough to have gone full circle. Decades ago I bought gear because I liked the way it looked. Then my knowledge / wisdom grew and everything at to be the most efficient / effective / practical. Now, I realize it is unlikely I will find myself in a situation where I am standing on a rock shouting "WOLVERINES" while thrusting an AK into the air above my head. This makes it okay to like / own something simply because I like the way it looks. ETA: Therefore, I should be less judgmental of the guys at the range wearing MCB. It does look neat. |

It does look cool. What he said about being easier to keep the clothing looking new makes sense. Light-colored clothing and solid colors show stains easier. He's a competitor so looking cool is a perfectly valid reason to wear it. I'd choose regular MultiCam or MC Tropic (where I live) to actually do sneaky ops, including in the dark. Competition and sneaky operations are far from similar. They just both happen to involve guns, and occasionally the wearing of camo. |

Kryptek has a similarish black color that is also pretty cool looking - Typhon if I remember right. I wouldn't WEAR it for gear though - I prefer camo and black colors are so hot in the sun. But for something like a ballcap when it's not sunny out, it's a cool color. I am definitely going to be using both of those colors when I get around to making duffel bags and grocery bags, other accessories or fashion bags, etc. for my site (my mother has gone down the trail of 'oh I can get him to make me cool girly bags!' ever since I made a run of grocery bags for one of the guys on here - she handed me her favorite 'giant tote around in the car' bag which finally fell apart, and told me to recreate it for her, but make it so it won't break. And to let her pick out the 'pretty and cute' fabric to use on it....sigh....) I'm especially looking forward to doing cool stuff like dark red thread with those two colors - or for women, hot pink thread. I've also seen someone going a zombie theme with neon green thread and multicam black, that was kinda cool too. I'm not really a big fashion guy, but I do like those combos. My buddy's wife keeps wanting me to make her a simple home defense chest rig in multicam black with the pink thread. Something that holds a couple extra pistol magazines, a flashlight, a mini-ifak, and a place to throw her phone along with a holster for her pistol. (she doesn't like gunbelts) For stuff like that, or maybe an EDC backpack, those colors are pretty nifty. On a side note - I forgot who it was, but it was one of the tier one units - their shooting team at one of the big competitions were all wearing multicam black pants a couple years ago in a picture I saw. Like said above - fashion. EDIT: Below, Kryptek Typhon picture. You can also see how the little orangeish zipper pulls really stand out with the black fabric. Imagine the same with red or pink thread. Also, honestly - again, I'm not really a fashion guy - but that jacket doesn't look bad as a fashion jacket to wear around town. I'm more of a smock guy - or even an old school M65 jacket - but yea. (I'm big sad btw - my favorite 'beat on it around town, taking the trash to the dump type thing' jacket - an OD M65 jacket, I ended up ripping the sleeve really bad rough-housing with my puppers last spring, he nipped at the fabric and got ahold of it just as I was pulling away from him, bad timing for both of us, and ripped a big tear in the sleeve. I need to figure out another jacket to take it's place. I got it at a thrift store for $2 a decade or two ago. https://i.ibb.co/0pNWB4Yd/kryptek-typhon-field-jacket-M65-1-1024x1024.jpg Multicam black for comparison. It's definitely a fashion camo. https://i.ibb.co/SXdQFb4x/multicam-black-M65-field-jacket-1.webp I have two holsters that I bought used. One is in Kryptek Typhon and the other in MCB. I would not have chosen the "patterns" at the time but they were for rare guns with the exact lights I had on the guns. I ended up selling the gun and Typhon holster, but still have and use the MCB holster. In kydex, it is much lighter than in fabric. It actually looks like dark camo instead of black with some greenish grey swatches. Regardless, I like the way MCB looks. I also really liked A-TACS FG (even though it never caught on). |
|
The pictures from your post finally showed up (not sure why, but images are now REALLY SLOW to load on ARFCOM at my two locations). The MCB looks really good. Definitely different than the cordura gear the guys had. The cordura belt and pouches looked mostly black with little MC blobs of greyish green. ETA: the MCB jacket more closely resembles the MCB holster I have. Here I am trying to get out of this hobby and now I want to spend $500 on freaking fashion camo gear. ![]() |

Google says that MultiCam Black was "Originally designed for law enforcement to project an authoritative presence". Is that true? https://share.google/aimode/rd3h7fXUPZG1gAArV I've never heard that before, and I don't know of any LE agencies actually using it. (Not around my AO, anyway.) EDIT: Ok... yep. Right here on the Crye website lol: The MultiCam® Black pattern was developed to meet the unique requirements of law enforcement officers operating in high-risk environments. It projects a distinctly authoritative presence appropriate for domestic operations. MultiCam® Black is designed to complement an officer's existing equipment and present a sharp, professional image for top-tier law enforcement units. https://multicampattern.com/patterns/#pattern-blackI guess I just wasn't paying attention. ![]() So it was always designed to be a fashion statement. Crye was just thinking/hoping it'd become a LE fashion statement. Interesting. |

Is that true? https://share.google/aimode/rd3h7fXUPZG1gAArV I have read, repeatedly, that Crye did not design it to function as camouflage. He designed it to project a "menacing appearance" for use in high-risk LE operations and to distinguish LE on the streets. |

That's over now, so they are making it again. |

I just assumed the Russians had copied it without authorization. ![]() I saw a bunch of passengers wearing various KUIU camo patterns in Alaska at some airports (and a few out on the streets) a couple weeks ago. That KUIU brand is apparently very popular up there. One of locals told me that hunters favor it. I didn't see any MultiCam at all. I was thinking I'd see at least one MultiCam Alpine, but nope. Maybe during the winter? |

I used to think it was stupid, even dumber than MC Alpine. But as OP stated, it isn’t black. Wearing mostly/all black and/or carrying a black backpack would be weird; MC Black is slightly less weird. |

Good to hear about ATACS-FG sppolin' up again. Works superbly in the woods here. Originally Posted By KILLERB6: I used to think it was stupid, even dumber than MC Alpine.\ Have you never seen snow? MC Alpine kicks ass in the white shit. |

Personally, I feel it’s all rather LARP-y. Im slightly embarrassed that I have 5.11 pants that I bought just because they had knee pad inserts to help with some 3-gun stages after kneeling on gravel. And the chest rig I bought for 3-gun gets put on just before I’m on deck for the stage and taken off immediately after. I use it because it’s the cheapest option to carry up to 8 rifle mags, 4 pistol, and a board of shells. Heck, I even made a face when the free hooded sunshirt I got from Daiwa has camo sleeves. I use it, but am glad I’m generally alone in the middle of a lake when I’m wearing it. I understand some think they look cool in tactical gear. Some also think it’s cool to rev their engines, squawk their tires, and roll coal. I am not one of them. In short, tactical gear should always be function over form. And no, “looking cool” is not a function, nor do I agree that it does, in fact, look cool worn outside of a tactical environment. |

Outside of the military and some hunting situations, all camo is just a fashion statement. Even within the military... outside of PJ's, Seals and/or Seabees, why does the Airforce and Navy need camo? Most types of hunting doesn't really require it either. Visually I like Multicam Black and its actually one of my favorites but yeah, its practical usefulness is highly questionable. |

Not that it's especially vintage, but those flecktarn field shirts, the older ones, aren't bad looking as a 'shirt jacket' type thing. |

Maybe with your circle it means something, but for most people it says “I wish I was something I’m not”. And that’s it. |
