What's the worst, nastiest, most unpleasant gun you've shot? Some combination of recoil, weight, blast, etc.
Couple for me: My Benelli M1 is light, handy, great sights, and kicks like a mad mule to the point I have to check my fillings after a session. Buddies Remington 700 in .300 Win Mag was unpleasant to shoot accurately for a scope sight in between the blast and recoil. Call me a wimp but that was too much for more than a few rounds for me. Another buddy had some lever action is some 40 cal round, and with a small stock that was painful to shoot. A Thompson was terrible to hold up and try to shoot - 12 pounds of gun that has all the grips, stocks, and sights at the wrong locations. AR in 6.8mm, 8.5" barrel, Surefire Muzzle Brake, under overhead cover and off a concrete bench. Two shots and time to take off the brake for a flash hider. For handguns - wood grip S&W29 was not fun, and I own a 629, but with the Hogue grip it's so much eaiser to shoot. |

A Thompson Contender pistol with a 45-70 barrel on it.
That was painful. |

S&W 340PD with a single .357 mag round is a real “welcome to Ouchville” event that will leave an impression in your memory (not to mention in your hand).

Ruger Blackhawk .30 Carbine is in first second and third place
Distant 4th is 2.5" S&W M66 5th Rossi Coach Gun with slugs |

Quoted: S&W 340PD with a single .357 mag round is a real “welcome to Ouchville” event that will leave an impression in your memory (not to mention in your hand). View Quote Yep, the worst handgun most have ever shot, even worse than the light weight 29 series in 44 mag. And for only ~8 ounces more you can get a 640 that you can fire without problems even with full .357 loads. |
|
Quoted: Ruger Blackhawk .30 Carbine is in first second and third place Distant 4th is 2.5" S&W M66 5th Rossi Coach Gun with slugs View Quote That's surprising - I figured based on muzzle energy and velocity a .30 Carbine would be like a .357 Mag. Lots more recoil? Flash and bang as maybe the round is designed to use a rifle length barrel to burn the powder up? |
|
Quoted: .454 Casull Much more painful to shoot than a .500 mag. View Quote Now that's surprising too. A buddy of mine has a Ruger .454 with a 3 inch barrel or so, and it's a fun handful, with the recoil moving the barrel up to the sky. But not painful. While I saw someone shoot a .500 SW from the bench with the bipod, and from the blast and kick it looked horrible. |

My father in laws 7mm Remington Mag loaded with hot rounds that he uses for Elk hunting. He said here try this and tell me what you think (I didn’t know what caliber it was until after). He was standing back laughing at my expression after touching off the 1st round. Lightweight 700 w/o a brake…that felt like getting hit in the shoulder with a small sledgehammer

S&W340pd in 357mag
Rem700 with the synthetic black plastic stock with no recoil pad and no brake in 7mm mag. |

I shot a 475 Linebaugh with factory wood grips off a pistol perch at a 100 yard target. The Freedom Arms barrel was magnaported but my hand hurt for a couple weeks because the handgun recoiled straight back. I had to use my right hand to write reports which was very difficult. I’ve been bruised on my shoulder from shooting shotguns and high powered rifles (light 12 gauges, 458 Win Mag, 460 Weatherby, 375 H&H, 50 BMG, 37 mm tear gas cartridges). That was nothing compared to how I hurt my hand. I’ve shot 44 Mag, 454 Casull, 480 Ruger, 500 S&W, 45-70 (Century Man. revolver) and 50 AE but the 475 Linebaugh hurt the worst.

View Quote I've not heard good things about .475 Linebaugh. At some point, it's time to get a rifle instead of upping handgun power. .44 Mag is my limit, and even that only with a full size 629 or TC. Glad to see that others have issues with 7mm mag / .300 Win Mag and a Rem 700 style rifle. My buddy and I had to tag team sighting it in, with each taking 2-3 shots then passing it over. |

Buffalo bore .357mag in a J-frame. Made my finger bleed.
.50bmg blast with a tank brake is absurd. Attached File |

Easy , .340 Weatherby Magnum with handloads . It was a set up for newbs , one of the gunsmith instructors thought it was funny .
Close second a #3 Ruger .45-70 with ...... hot handloads ! |

Lots more recoil? Flash and bang as maybe the round is designed to use a rifle length barrel to burn the powder up? .30 Carbine Blackhawks, and Automag III's have an absurd amount of blast/concussion....... All the pistol lanes at the range will go eerily quiet after you touch off the 1st round out of one... Most unpleasant guns I've ever fired were an 1892 Berthier carbine with some 1948 vintage "Balle D" from Hotchkiss feed strips , and a pre-war Mauser sporter in 7x66 Vom Hofe .... both were light, with all the weight in the butt.... |

Ultra light weight 3” .44. Six rounds and my hand was numb. It was nothing like any .44 I’ve ever shot. Felt like it was almost nothing in my hand until I pulled the trigger. .S and W .500 with a 6” barrel. The guy who shot it right before me ripped his thumbnail off when he shot it. Wrong grip I guess. But wow what a hand cannon. Rifle should have to be an 03. An hour of that wears you out. Not sure how they did it during WW I

Most unpleasant was a tiny .38 special backup revolver. Snappy little f*cker that made a good firing grip nearly impossible.
My friend, who was a SFPD SWAT sniper at the time, carried it in some sort of deep cover contraption in the front of his pants. |

easy answer(s)
Biggest pain in my ass was the Kel Tec PF9. So many failures with that thing with all sorts of ammo Physical pain is my Savage 212 slug gun, using Remington Premier Accutip sabot slugs (I shoot 45-70 and 44 Magnum lever guns and there is no comparison to that slug gun!) |

Glock 32. Compact shooting 357 sig. Gun is too small for my hands and that 357 sig was too snappy if you can't hang onto the thing. Not fun.

Mossberg 500 with 3 1/2” turkey loads. Unless starving, no turkey is worth that punishment.
Whatever model S&W lightweight .357 Magnum J-frame with small grips, using full power magnums. |

Prepared for the hate
Springfield Armory M1A A thoroughly mediocre gun in every single way. It's hard to make shooting boring, but that gun about did it. |
|
Rem 700 , 338 Win Mag, light weight HS precision synthetic stock, hot dangerous game ammo.
|
|
3" Magnum 00 Buck in a Mossberg 500..
That aluminum frame makes that gun too light to absorb that kind of recoil. |
|
A buddy of mine had an HK semi-auto shotgun. (Benelli?) That thing absolutely sucked with slugs or double ought buck.
Another would be the TC Contender in .30-30 I used for silhouette shooting many years ago. |
|
My turkish Benelli clone with magnum shot. 5 shells and I had enough.
|
|
10 year old me with a H&R 12 gauge with a slug. Grandpa thought it was just hilarious
Recently a BFR in 45-70. Cant remember the load. But it was HOTTT |
|
.44 mag snub nose, kicked like a mule, I shot it once and my hands hurt bad enough I didn't shoot it again. On the other hand I have a Redhawk in .44 mag with an 8" and its a pleasure to shoot.

Full size Kimber steel frame 1911 with a .460 Rowland Compensated Conversion kit on it. When I pulled the trigger on it the first time I was shocked at the recoil. After a few rounds I was unhappy with myself for wasting the money. After 200 rounds I had a strange little grin on my face.

The recoil action does nothing to help the kick, and its very lightweight. I tend to load it all the way up to add weight if I need to fire it - no single rounds with slugs or buck. |

Remington 700 Sendero 7mm Magnum, Tikka T3 Light .300 Winchester Magnum, and a Keltec KSG. That KSG made birdshot feel like magnums

Call me a sis but two rounds of 300 Win Mag out of my stepdad's deer rifle was enough for me. Can't remember the model. I politely decline when he offers to let me shoot it again.
44mag Deagle sucked to shoot. I dont have large hands and it simple felt too bulky and uncomfortable. The same round in a revolver is fine for me. NAA .22lr sucked to shoot. I know they have their place and all but damn it was 100% opposite of fun to shoot. I was expecting it to be a fun little plinker. I dont know what gave me that idea. |

That's the most powerful rifle I've shot - I'm curious if more powerful rifles like a .375 H&H or .458 Win are much worse, or if the slower bullet makes for a different recoil cycle than the sharp kick on the 7mm and 30 cal mags. |

Leinad .410/.45 long colt
It’s a cheap derringer knock off And miserable to shoot. Also loud enough to make your eardrums bleed |
|
Oh yeah, forgot about my Bond Arms Snake Slayer, in 45 Colt and .410. Nice to look at, terrible to shoot.
