Just picked up this rifle today and I’m wondering what would be good ammunition for this gun. Is any .44 mag ammo gtg? Any suggestions for plinking and hunting ammo?

Modern 44 mag rifles will handle any factory 44Special or 44 magnum commercially made ammo that you find in the gun store.

I find Barnes 44 mag from a Henry lever rifle have around 1640 ft per sec velocity. That’s a good hunting load.

I load 44 spc for plinking.  Win 94 runs it fine, and it doesn't hurt my hand in the vaquero.

For hunting, full load hornady.

That skinny stock can be rough on the shoulder with 240 grain JHP (I only had my Deagle ammo when I got it)
I put a Limbsaver pad on mine.
With light recoiling .44 there is a significant shift in POI, obviously.

I’m all in on kinetic energy but the BB isn’t really needed.  Any good 240g .44 mag load is already cooking along 1600-1700 fps from a carbine.     Like I said I’m all in, but the price they ask is a bit much.    I hand load but found my 1894 loves the WWB 240sp loads. Those make for a great whitetail load.
Magtech shoots pretty good and well as HSM ammo.

A lot of people load with .432-.433 bullets to get any kind of accuracy with those 44s.

I think Marlin used the same barrel for 44-40, 444, and 44mag. .433” groove diameter.

When I got my 44 Magnum (92 Rossi) a few months ago, I settled on a 250 cast SWC at 1200 fps. I've killed quite a bit of game with .44 Special and 45 Colt revolvers; their bullets running 950-1000 fps work great. If you want to shoot heavy loads in your .44 Magnum, that's your choice, but if I weren't a handloader I'd buy Buffalo Bore "heavy" .44 Special rounds. I assure you they'll do everything most of us need without beating you to death.

I considered buying some Fiocchi 240 grain soft points when I was shopping for a rifle until I saw a Lucky Gunner review on .357 and .44 out of a rifle. They were doing like 1200fps out of a rifle, I'd probably pass on them.

I ended up picking up a few boxes of 180 grain Remington soft points from my FFL. They shoot well enough and Lucky Gunner chrono'd them at over 2000fps out of a rifle. I also have 300 grain Privi soft points and some Hornaday FTX ammo but haven't shot either. I watched a few videos of Henry rifles cycling 300's just fine so I also bought 500 300-grain bullets off the EE to reload. Henry and Ruger Marlin .44s have a 1:20 twist so I bet they'll stabilize fine.

If you don't reload, 44 is a good reason to start. Missouri bullet 240 gr and H110 is my Marlin 11894CS stainless my go to range load. It is a clone of the Hornady 240gr XTP hunting load I take to the woods. Have killed anything with it yet, but those 240gr XTP in my muzzleloader dropped quite a few deer.

Winchester white box 240 gr sp for factory load. Shot accurately out of my JM 16.5”. Cycled smoothly as well.
Hornady XTPs shoot well and have good reputation on deer.
If you reload and shoot cast bullets you will need to stay away from .429 size they will lead the bore. .432” or .433” powder coated and gas checked does not. Some of the cast 300 gr wfn would shot accurately but did not cycle all that well in mine. Can’t remember what brand- been 10 years or more since I played with the 44 loads…

Interesting, with factory ammo they all go through the same little hole , with my reloads @.429  and unique I’d get better groups throwing them.  Best I can get is 2 inches at 25 yards with 7 grains unique . 10 grans and that’s about 5 inches

I’m going to try bullseye but will look for larger diameter cast bullets ( might be hard to find around these parts)
