Is there any difference at all between the operating parts of the Virtus and the old MCX patrol, or does is just come with the new carriage that the recall replaced?

The length of the piston and location of the gas valve are different. The piston configuration changed from the earlier version to the newer, though that happened before Virtus.

And with the new tapered lugs the old and new bolts/barrels aren't interchangeable.  Different gen uppers and handguards aren't interchangeable either.
