http://www.sturmgewehr.com/forums/index.php?/topic/9216-wts-mk-48-lmg-complete-conversion-kit-with-receiver-build-parts-available-see-pics/

Didn't know this was even possible. I sent the seller and email asking what permanent modifications would be required.

Anyone heard of this before?

Also any clue as to what restrictions might be in place for making permanent changes to a pre-may M249 that would allow this caliber conversion? I know this can be done on a HK21/23, but that MG was designed to do that, and it doesn't require and drilling, welding, cutting, etc... to perform the conversion.

EDIT: Probably not supposed to post links to items for sale but im not the seller and just want others to see the source of the info.

I'm in the process of building a postie MK48 now.  The parts that are different are the top cover, feed tray, ejector, ejection port door, barrel, bolt, slide assembly, and trigger assembly.  You will need to open up the ejection port on your receiver, but that won't prevent you from going back.  You can easily covert back to M249/MK46 configuration just by swapping the top cover, feed tray, ejector, barrel, and bolt.  You can use the MK48 trigger assembly and slide assembly in both calibers, just not the other way around.

For a postie go for it.
For a transferrable or pre may you're nuts. Mk48s destroy the receiver. There is a reason theyre not fielded commonly and left only to the special units that have beaucoup bucks to swap em out. I need to find the report but mk48s have a low round count life.

Cant find the official FN specs, but iirc the receiver life is 50k rounds and the bolt life a measly 15k rounds. A real contrast to the tanky 240s.

For what it's worth, I've bought from Greg before. He is GTG.

What wears out on the MK48 receiver? Can they be repeatedly repaired?

I've got a spare MK48 barrel if any of you guys need one. Other belt fed barrels too.

Guys love carrying the Mk48s over the M240Ls.  However, bolts break and barrels wear out.  I've coded out several Mk48s as the receivers got damaged where I couldn't fix them and sent them back to Crane.

Does Crane ever get the receivers repaired?

Nice!
Would you happen to have the NSN for that locker handy?

No one is going to convert a PreMay 249 into a MK48. PreMay 249s are extremely rare. Only 100 are known to exist, and they command a collectors premium over a post sample 249.

But more importantly, I don't think it's possible without cutting and welding the 249. The receiver on a 249 is way different from the receiver of a MK48.

As far as post samples, do you guys think the best way to go would be getting a MK48 and usually running it configured as a MK46, only firing as a 7.62 on occasion?

Can anything be done to prolong the life of the receiver with 7.62? Maybe reduce the gas port diameter?

Do you have an m240 yet? If you don’t it seems like money better spent for a 308. Buy a hand full of barrels and you can run it till you run out of ammo money(and I don’t like to stop)

No 240 yet. I have a M60E3 and a Yugo M53 kit I could drop MG3 parts into.

The M240L and MK48 are tough to choose between. I like the longevity of the 240, but SOCOM gave up their M60's for the MK48 (for a little weight loss). I don't have their budget though, and the receiver issue(s) concern me.

The lightweight M60E3 (and newer) barrels are rated for 100 rounds per minute (at the rapid rate), with a barrel change recommended every 5 minutes.

The original Vietnam era barrels (thicker/heavier) are rated for 200 rounds per minute, with changes every 10 minutes (also rapid rate).

How do those numbers compare for the MK48 and M240L barrels, and can you guys offer any other real world experience regarding heat damage or longevity?

Id bet dollars to odonuts the mk46  config would be a lot gentler than the mk48 308.
Unfortunately i dont have experience on the 240L. But thr 240b were the bees knees and was the one machine gun that never had a single issue overseas. And i know the ones in our unit were old and beat to shit because they looked like it. But they worked. Couldnt say the same for all the other belt feds. Seeing how they reduced the weight on the 240L variant id jump on one of those if it was for my personal collection. Im jealous machineguntony has one of the rare tranaferrables out there.
Now if it was company budget? Mk48 away sir. Aint my money paying for the replacement lol.
