Drunken funbroker bidding?

Hotlinked for OP. That's not really out of line for what that gun would bring in my area OP. Its a nice, honest old gun. I'd make that a hunter and harass some rabbits and birds with it. |
|
Its probably a little cheap for what they would ask for here. It's a little over what they bring on GB. It's my 3rd 16 gauge double. Will join an old crescent knickerbocker and a Stevens 315. I'll get a picture of all 3 when it comes in. Just in time for doves.

Maybe add a grip cap on the bottom to give it an upscale post-Apoc look. Then you might actually have something worth taking to the local gun-guy 'Show-n-Tell.' |

Shoot the gun as it was intended to be shot and enjoy. Someday anthologists will look back and wonder why people took perfectly good shotguns and chopped the barrels off rendering them useless for what they were intended. If you need a short barrel shotgun please chop some unless POS. No you didn’t over pay. |

We pheasant hunted for the better part of 30 years with the same group of guys before they all started to pass on, one them was a good friend and neighbor who trained most of our dogs and carried that exact LeFever and he was always in the top 5 of the group for the number of birds he took with it on every hunt.
Those barrels were trued to POA/POI every bit as good as my Browning BSS's or some of the higher dollar S/S guns in that group that were the "usual suspects" for taking more birds consistently. Let us know how it shoots! If that's built to the same standard that old Zeke's was I think you'll love it in the field and that's not much money at all to play the side by side game considering where most of them start in a quality gun these days. |

Perfect at nothing View Quote It's a square bore, meaning it throws the perfect shot column. Kind of like in gas engines. 12 gauges are over square and throw a column that is wider than it is long. 20 and under are under square and the shot column is longer than it is wide. The 16 is perfect and this was discovered even before self contained cartridges. It throws the best patterns because of simple geometry. While choke tubes can be tailored to the pattern a shooter desires in other gauges, the 16 really shines in fixed choke guns like doubles. https://www.chuckhawks.com/16_gauge_wakeman.htm https://www.guns.com/2015/10/28/the-16-gauge-shotgun-never-given-its-due/ |

I have three 16's, two SXS's and one pump.
Nothing wrong with them other than finding ammo in the boonies. Lucky for me the local Ganders were closing and moving into bigger buildings (10+ years ago) so I bought up a ton of field loads for around $5 a box. To me, a shotgun is a shotgun. Some just lob more pellets than others. |
|
Nice SXS.
I still use my late Dad's 1957 Browning Sweet 16 for pheasants every fall. Unfortunately it's the only 16ga I own. |
|
My boss picked up some recently. He was in the $700's for each I believe.
|
|
I was about to say chop the barrels then realized it's a 16.
I don't think I've ever shot one...can't personally see a point between it or a 20ga but I also don't do any upland bird hunting. |

If the condition is as described in the add, I don't think you did too bad. You didn't steal it but you probably got a neat, old shotgun you can actually shoot. Have you seen how much new Chinese or Turkish junk is going for?
Make sure you measure the chamber length and inspect the gun thoroughly before shooting. Do your own homework, Do not trust just what the seller says. |
|
Be nice if it were choked a bit less, but looks like a good, honest old 16. I doubt you'll ever find yourself feeling it's not worth $400 out in the field.

Smokin' deal.
It's been said that the "vintage" SxS market is dying because only old guys like them. |

OP you've had me looking at 16 gauges all evening. I have convinced myself I need a 16 ga double as I currently don't have one.

Nice buy OP. I bought this while drunk last weekend.
Attached File I also have that exact same shotgun. It was my Grandfathers, and I shoot the ever loving crap out of it. Locks up tight and kills dove like none other. |

Lots to read if you are so inclined to learn. Find a late 20s to 50s double and go bust some doves. Check out 16ga.com |

Got them both out to the clays range this afternoon. Did, poorly. But was by myself and forgot to run a delay on the throwers.
Was happy with them. Busted one whenever I did my part. Need more practice. I missed dove season with back surgery. Just got the restrictions lifted and was able to shoot. |
