I know that a mil spec stock will not fit on a commercial buffer tube but is there a problem with using a commercial stock on a mil spec buffer tube? (other than loose fit)

really loose fit... my advise is to stick to compatible parts. Be aware that commercial does not just mean different dimensions, its also unregulated tolerances and materials used vs milspec which is always within a certain tolerance and made from a specified type of aluminum (7075 T6  type III class 2 hard-coat anodized)

And to make matters worse, there are milspec diameter tubes out there that will fit a milspec stock but are not constructed "the milspec way".

Stick with a quality source and you should be OK.
