Ordered some DTNVS and hoping I got some nice tubes (24UA – 33.9 SNR, 72 LP, 2441 FOM, 1.6 EBI, 0.8 halo, 63.7k gain. No spots on L3 data sheet / 34.7 SNR, 72 LP, 2498 FOM, 1.6 EBI, 0.8 halo, 63.4k gain. No spots on L3 data sheet.)

I know I’ll need an illuminator + laser device.  I’m thinking a surefire helmet mounted IR ( not sure which model) would take care of admin/nav duties. I’d love a mawl but that is out of price range. What would be a good choice for weapon mounted IR illumination + laser aiming?

Go to the grey market and get a FP laser. You dont pay for a FP laser specifically, its the illuminator that is much better vs the civ powered one.

I have a Russian Perst 3 and honestly, when compared to the civilian strength lasers and illuminators, theres not much of a functional difference.

The IR laser / illuminator on it is probably twice the strength of the full power american variants, but realistically, you’re only going to be able to identify subjects out to about 100 yards at night with your tubes so having an IR laser / illuminator that can throw beyond that is kind of a waste unless you have magnified NV.

I have a 3 power magnifier for my PVS-14 filmless WP with decent tube specs and when I’m searching fields and open areas at night for suspects, I usually
use an aspherical, zoomable IR flashlight.

Arguably, as a cop holding a perimeter while looking for a fleeing burglar or car thief, I would be more legally justified waiving around or pointing the infrared illuminator attached to a rifle, than a regular citizen on a hike or investigating a bump in the night or whatever, but still, I’d never even think of doing it.

It’s basically the equivalent or worse than using a pistol mounted weapon light as a flashlight to direct traffic or guide your path on a walking trail or something.

If there is someone out there that uses a rifle mounted infrared illuminator for target scanning, I would love to know in what capacity they use it in. But even for hog hunting at night, I haven’t found it to be as useful as a handheld zoomable infrared light.

This is what I use for scanning:

I have the White, IR, and red LED’s, although I don’t think I have ever actually used the white one before, and for predator hunting, the red one almost works better, or at least allows me to spot things from a greater range with the naked eye, then the IR one and my night vision.

I don’t hesitate much to use white light under nods of it is advantageous.
