Going to add a barrel clamp thing, the one clamp style that looks like a M14 and a flash hider. Going for a duplicate of my norinco m14. Started studying over at perfect union for improvements. Can't wait to get this thing here. I had 2 mini 14s back in the 80s when they were new so I know how bad they shoot. Hoping to use some of the new ideas to improve an old design. |

You realize that it's sold as a 'Parts Gun' so the seller is saying that it's not necessarily in firing condition, don't you?

Yes. I'll check headspace first. There are new take off barrels on eBay. Having a lathe in your garage helps. It may get sent back to Ruger.

Where to buy a new recoil spring? Midway is out of stock and brownells only has the extra power wolf. Don't see one on the shop ruger site.
Called Ruger and they are sending one out today. I'm gonna try to get to the range this evening. |

50 yards indoor range. It's too dark to shoot open sights well. So this group is actually better than I expected. https://i.imgur.com/tvfWKSW.jpg The gas bushing hole is less than .060 in diameter. Not sure that's factory. Brass was ejected with enthusiasm straight ahead to about 12:30. I'll replace the recoil spring and shorten the barrel before replacing the gas bushing. I'm happy. Rifle functioned 100%. View Quote |

Hey! 2 are touching!
Seriously it's a dark indoor range and my eyes are over 50 years old. A lot of that group size could be more my fault than the mini. |

That looks like what I had back in 1986. Like a dumbass with no money I sold it to purchase something else.
However, I redeemed myself this spring and picked up a stainless 188 series ranch rifle. I should have saved my targets from Sunday because nobody will believe how good it shoots. |

Very nice rifle-- I once owned a 181-Series, quite liked it but was made an offer I couldn't refuse-- Do yourself a favor and spend $20 in a synthetic handguard. As pretty as the wood handguards are, it takes surprisingly little for them to start to char. Don't ask how I found out.

Used an alcohol based leather die. Though I'm starting to think I need to change my application process. It's hard to get on evenly with a cloth or brush. Might try spraying it on thinned with a mini air brush next time.

The thing I like the most is the lines of the older stocks with the wood handguards.
Makes them look like a 5.56 love child of a Garand and M1 Carbine. I found a set really cheap for my 188 series Ranch. |

Who got the last similar 181 series on Gunbroker from the same seller? - Curious if the other sold for parts guns worked and Where are the pics!
Love the look of the old school wood handguards even if they heat up quick, Its just nostalgic. |

Besides bedding my 187 Mini, I put a scout mount over the gas block and changed the gas valve that reduces gas to the op rod. Mine shoots great. I won't say how good, because you will not believe me. Good enough for coyotes.

I've thought about the tech sight. May buy an extra factory rear and make my own.

That looks really nice, OP. I just bought a new production Mini a few months ago, but this thread is making me wish I'd bought a police trade-in and souped it up like you did.
