I didn't get much help in the precision rifles section: https://www.ar15.com/forums/precision-rifles/How-well-do-CMMG-dedicated-uppers-shoot-1-2-MOA-/18-7495/

The 5.56 to .22LR conversions function, but I'm lucky to get 4 MOA at 50ft.

I'm hoping for <2 MOA with AutoMatch/MiniMag, but the Keystone Accuracy uppers are a little too rich for me. It looks like I can build uppers with CMMG parts for half the price.

I have a dedicated 9" upper and get good results from it. The suppressor helps to tighten up the groups. It is not a bench gun.

Here is a test I posted on this forum a couple years ago but has since gone into the archive.   I posted the same test on rimfirecentral but in essense ammunition makes a very significant difference in accuracy.  A cheaper option than Keystone but still a quality rimfire  AR-15 22 LR barrel is a Beyer.  CMMG barrels are plenty accurate for me but they are kind of luck of the draw on accuracy which can be said for about any rack grade barrel.  Nordic also get good reviews on their 22 uppers and barrels.

I have pictures of targets I’ve shot with my two CMMG 16” barrels 22 LR and I can post a couple if you want.

I had a 20" A4 type upper and at 100yds I could get 3MOA with CCI Mini Mags if I did my part, this was with open sights. I ended up selling the upper because I'd rather just shoot my centerfire ARs.

Here are some pictures from groups I shot with my two CMMG 16” 22 LR AR-15’s.   Both barrels have 16” M-4 profile barrels, one upper as a CAR hand guard and the other uses the larger M-4 hand guard.  Neither barrel is free floated and both rifles have RRA NM triggers with six position collapsable stocks.

I used the same Tasco 2.5-10 scope on both rifles.  These two 22 rimfire AR-15’s normally wear red dot sights (E O Tech 512 or a Vortex Strikefire).

I refer to the two rifles as CMMG 1 and CMMG 2.   All targets were shot at 50 yards off a MTM bench using a bipod and rear sand bag.   I used 9” paper plates and used a felt tip marker to draw a rectangle for a aiming point.

The first target is a ten shot group of CCI Standard velocity out of rifle CMMG 1.  I used a ruler to measure the group size.  Furthest distance between two bullets holes center to center (extreme spread).

This a group from Federal Game Shok 38 grain plated HP, as you can see ammo makes a significant difference in each barrel.   This ammo shot a lot better in my previous conversion test but the CMMG barrels did not like this load.

This is the first group I shot with the Federal Game Shok which almost hit off the plate. I adjusted the scope and shot the group above.   The Federal GS was not consistent and I got one dud, the only malfunction of the day.

Beyer? The aluminum with steel liner Beyer?

The Beyer barrels with the liners get good reviews however I have no personal experience with Clint Beyer’s barrels.   There are many threads in the Rimfire and pistol tab in the AR-15 section.    The two CMMG rifles/barrels I tested with the 2.5-10 scope have been shot almost entirely with red dot sights.   One CMMG dedicated 22 LR AR-15 is set up like my duty rifle in 5.56/223 with E O Tech 511, 3 point sling and used for CQB drills and plinking.

The second CMMG dedicated rifle used a Vortex Strikefire RDS and used a two point sling and is easier to use for left handed shooters.

My personal opinion from having four different 22 rimfire AR-15’s and shooting several others is if your looking for pure accuracy in a 22 LR the AR-15 is not the best platform.   I use my scoped 22 LR AR-15’s to practice my bench shooting technique so I can get trigger time so I benifit when I shoot my centerfire target AR-15’s.

I have never shot competition where accuracy was the only criteria for success.   I enjoy my rimfire AR-15’s and shoot a lot of rimfire pistols and revolvers.

Each individual barrel is unique and every 22 rimfire barrel I’ve used was sensitive to the ammunition used.  High dollar target ammo is almost always more accurate but each rifle/barrel seems to have it’s own preference for producing best accuracy.

For top accuracy in an AR-15 I think your looking at Compass Lake Engineering, Accuracy Speaks, Keystone and maybe JP or Beyer.   There are some very good shooting rack grade barrels but it is more luck, some are good others are average and some will be below average.

I rarely shoot paper targets past 50 yards for groups with an AR-15 rimfire.   I shoot steel targets a lot at various ranges with rimfires so I don’t have many targets where I’ve shot scoped 22’s at 100 yards or further.   I feel like 50 yards gives a good bench mark of performance for 22 LR.   The conditions were favorable on the day I conducted the shooting with my two CMMG AR-15’s scoped.

Well you’re on the right track not going with a drop in kit in your .223 AR.

my first dedicated was a Nordic that was terrible in accuracy and jammed every magazine.  I’m sure you can recognize the shit show when you’re all slung up prone and you have an empty blocking the bolt on the left side of the new round.   The recrowned my barrel and went it back.   I kind of abandoned it in the back of the safe until lately.  Bravo5two gave me some advise to fix or replace the extractor.  I put in a volquatzen and now it runs perfect and will get back to wringing out accuracy.

I stumbled across a used (barely) cmmg 16” dedicated upper and put a spare Aimpoint on it and IIrc I first wrung it out with my Nikon 3-9x in a Larue mount.  Anyways mine was very consistent.   I would not hesitate to buy one again.   I was pleasantly surprised with the accuracy and perfect function.   At fifty I get way better groups than eight inches at 50 yards.    (I’m jesting about the other thread)!    No it won’t be the same as a 52match over varget but it is enough for a position trainer with the expectation of the odd ammunition flier that you get with ordinary rimfire ammo at times.

Not sure what target you are going to use for your fifty yard match but using a SR1 at fifty and you should be pounding the ten ring if not the x ring.    Granted you’re at half the called for distance.    I would  expect fifty yard groups around an inch out of the CMMG.  It is better than 8” I did say.

Hmm...

Makes you wonder why 10-22s are so popular to upgrade into a precision oriented build. What keeps the rimfire AR15 from being as precise? Clearance between the BCG and receivers?

Brony... I have a CMMG dedicated AR upper with collar, and a 10/22 that was built for the STC before there was a lot of aftermarket parts...in working with the 10/22, bolt head space, chamber depth cut, and limiting the vertical play of the firing pin greatly improved the accuracy and consistency... I was shooting an aftermarket Clark fluted barrel that was bedded and double lugged.... I would surmise not that much effort has been done on the AR drop in units, which would have a better sight mounting platform and availability of triggers

The chamber bolt face is part of the problem which is why Compass Lake Engineering uses a Model 261 conversion bolt adapted to a fixed barrel with no collar.  CLE keeps very tight tolerances which adds to the cost.  There really are no 22 rimfire products mass produced for the AR-15 where the purpose is pure accuracy.   Some of the light single stage target triggers designed for the AR-15 might not work with 22 rimfire conversion bolt.

If you look at my conversion kit test you can see that with good match ammo an AR-15 rimfires can produce pretty decent accuracy.   It really depends on if you want top accuracy.   I’ve shot Valquartsen  22 rimfire which are basically 10/22 action but highly refined and expensive.   To achieve that level of accuracy in the AR-15 your probably going to have to spend a comparable sum of money.   With the 10/22 there is enough market where the quality and price make it more affordable to achieve a higher level of accuracy.
