Good to see my account still works after ignoring it for 10 years.
Just thinking randomly... I almost never see Scar 17s around "out in the wild"... I've been looking for them ever since I got one last year (I'm not rich but I turned 40 and figured it was cheaper than a convertible and a mistress ). I only rarely see them in gun stores and have been to 4 different gun shows in the past year or so without seeing a single one. I never see anyone else with a Scar at the range and it attracts annoying amounts of attention when I take it anywhere. Look on the internet though and there are craptons of Scar 17 threads and pics; almost makes SCARs look as popular as ARs. The gun has been available for a while now... are they all hiding in the back of gun safes or are there actually very few of them actually out there? Is there some Scar owner's law that says we have to plaster pics of them all over the net? Is it even worth getting interested/excited over to you if you see one? I just don't understand why such a supposedly popular rifle doesn't show up more in the real world... at least from my perspective. Anyway, please edjumacate me on this.... |

FN rifles always attract attention. They are all safe queens. No one shoots 308 in volume like 556. Mags arent cheap. Cant put a cheap optic on it because poor people.
They are out there. Can find them on average $2700 ish. Come with 1 FN mag... Every other FNH gun on planet horse-shit comes with 3. I'm just here to bitch. But yeah, they exist. |

[#2]
I've only ever seen one in the wild.
It was set up as a DMR rig with a "special" lower (better trigger). |

I see lots of them at gun shows, 4 or 5 at each show being typical. Sometimes there will be more scar 17s than 16s. They come up for sale regularly on our state's used gun trader, usually at laughable prices. Could be they aren't as common in Utah.
Eta: I think most of the gun shops around tend to have them in stock too somewhat regularly. Virginia is pretty good about the volume of guns we have, we just don't have as many places to shoot them. |

I see them around here all the time. I have 2 and two of my friends have their own

Thanks all for the info... maybe SCARs just aren't big sellers here or maybe I just don't get out enough.

I've never seen a 17 at a range but granted I don't shoot a lot. That being said, my range is a pretty popular rangenwith the young crowd in a large military town
|

[#9]
When I pull mine out I get lots of questions then those shooting near me get agitated and move or leave because of the brake concussion.
I have seen two at my range and those are friends of mine. |

Lol, maybe because a very small minority of the shooting population would/could afford a $3000 rifle and the expensive ammo to feed it?
Not hating, but 99.9% of shooters are not arfcommers, and only a handful of arfcommers have them. |

I paid 2800 for a “used” one 5 months ago. Seriously I don’t think the guy even shot it. Came with the FNH rail extension and a leupold scope and leupold mount. Two mags. I wasn’t planning on buying one but when I saw that I went home and dug out that emergency credit card and got it the next day. I have shot it exactly one time since I bought it. I need to shoot it more.

I've seen one (range rental gun) in the last several years. Rented it, shot it, hated the noise and concussion, saved myself $3k

Black or "50 shades of FDE", a SCAR is a SCAR. The militaries of the world use both colors too.

Hmm I just realized that I’ve only ever seen one other scar 17 in the wild. I tend to shoot with friends on their private land unless it’s freezing or raining outside. I do go to a local 100yd range to zero rifles and get velocity data on reloads, but I try to go on weekdays when it’s empty.
Huh... You just made me realize I love shooting and going shooting with friends but hate doing so I’m crowded areas amongst strangers. Just don’t trust the safety and common sense of unknown people I guess. |

I have mine. I don't obsess about other people having them or not, or liking them or not. I'm happy with mine and that satisfies me.

I take my SCAR out every two or three weeks to the public range I shoot at.
I have seen four or five SCARs there in the last two years. Since it seems everyone has some kind of black rifle now days the non AR guns don't stand out as much. I used to get a lot of looks but either I don't notice or don't get asked about it as much these days. There are basically two types of people that look or ask, people that know what they are looking at, and more common are people that I think have seen them in a video game or in a movie. |

[#29]
I see one or two usually every time I’m at the range.
The again they are usually the cheaper guns on the line at the range. Compared to Meredith, Barrett, and lord know what ever else is being shot on the 500-1250y line. Fun guns. I’d like one in 6.5CM ETA: they are a tool. First thing I did to my fde 16s was krylon it. |

Not to stray off the subject but thought I’d share this amusing encounter. One of the “gun guys” at work came up to me the other day. He said, “Have you got any new guns lately?”
I said, “As a matter of fact I have. I picked up a SCAR 17.” He kind of frowned and said, “I’ve never been a big fan of those. They hardly kill squirrels reliably. I said, “What?” He said, “It’s just personal preference. I’d take a 22 mag over 17hmr.” Lol! |

Your opinion of the stock. Sounds like you didn’t see any issues. Everyone keep OE stock or did anybody swap it out? Did optics damage occur with any kind of frequency? I’ve heard accuracy approaches m110. Any truth to that? Given the choice between a well kept M4, or a SCAR16 or SCAR17, what would be your preference. I know mission conditions may dictate one over the other of course, but overall any favorite? Lastly, how was reliability with the 17? Sorry to bombard you. No hurry on response. my buddy won one in one of those online raffles. He set it up to kill pigs but has other stuff suited to the task. I tried trading for it, but didn't want to put up that much cash for what would essentially be a 1x a year range trip. My local range doesn't allow rifle rounds, the indoor ranges don't or only go to 25 yards if they do, I don't hunt, and I live in the suburbs. I thought it would be an epic truck gun but meh, not worth it to me.
Saw one at the range once. Guy had a night force on it, match ammo, was wearing a rolex and driving a new mercedes. He was a local attorney and let me shoot it. meh. he giggled more at the $200 bolt 22 with can on it that I had in the next lane, and we both made a hole in the middle of our respective papers a football field away. |
