Really thinking hard about buying one of the Henry single shot rifles.

But waffling on caliber.

Would be used for range fun to 200 yards, maybe for deer/pig hunting here in N Florida.

Thinking 30-30, 308, 350 Legend, 450 Bushmaster, 44 magnum, or 45-70

The 44 mag kinda appeals since I have a Ruger carbine that I need to reload for anyway

The 30-30 is interesting, 'cause as a single shot I can use pointy bullets and I've read that singles typically do better w/ a rimmed round.

308 is self-explanatory.

The 350 and 450s are interesting for the possibility of using 9mm or 45acp bullets for light plinking or loading up the big stuff.

And 45-70 because, well, I've never owned one and why the hell not?

Alternatively I may end up with a Contender pistol w/ either 22 hornet, 223, or 30-30 barrel on it....

Of those choices I'd say you can't go wrong with 30-30. There's a reason it's been a popular round for 100+ years out here in the West.

Those rifles don't even weigh 7 lbs.

Not sure you want a 45-70; you may want a more robust rifle in that caliber.

As in more weight for recoil management?

Yes. My 45-70 is 8.1 lbs unloaded and has a 22" octagon barrel. I usually shoot it standing up.

I have lots of Fudd guns.  My favorite single shot is an H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic 45-70.   It has a long 32" barrel and globe front and receiver target sights.  It weights 8.0 lbs.  It has a curved steel buttplate (which I cover with a Limbsaver slip on pad when shooting).

It is a very strong action.  I target shoot with mild SAAMI pressure ammo.  But, I hunt with it in our "primitive weapons" deer season which allows single shot .45-70.   For that I shoot Buffalo Bore 405 grain jacketed soft points which leave that long barrel at 2100 fps.  That is getting up into elephant gun power.  Recoil is stout.  Brisk, when sighting in.  But you only shoot once in the field with deer, and don't really notice it.

I drilled and tapped mine for a QD return to zero scout scope for use when deer hunting.  The forward mount permits me to retain the receiver sight.  I remove it otherwise.

It's hard to beat a Thompson Center Contender pistol for the number of things you can do with it.

I have an older one I picked up on GB, with the cougar on the side.  It came with a 45 Colt / 410 barrel, and is a hoot to shoot with the shotshells.

Also bought a .44 mag barrel, and a .223 one, which I had threaded, put a flash hider mount on, and use with a suppressor.  Super quiet since there's no action noise and no gas coming out the back of it.

With the TC line, you can buy a grip that has an AR style thread on the back, put a brace on it, and have a poor mans' SBRish for even more fun.

Get one in 357 magnum and have it punched to 357 max.

If you are considering the 30-30 just go ahead and get the 308.

Get a Ruger American Ranch in 350/450. Light weight bolt action. Feeds from AR mags. Sorta fuddy being that it's bolt action and from ruger.

IMHO, 45/70 for brute power..... but ammo is expensive, and typical factory loads are down loaded.

450BM .... you'll probably find more of that is stock.

Or the 44Mag, since you already own that caliber.

In stock.   Yeah, its pricey.  Don't need much.  I have two boxes of the 405 grain. It hits 2100 fps from the long 32" single shot barrel.   I also handload 405 jacketed soft points as hot for hunting or milder for target and other purposes.

405 grain soft points or solids at 2100 fps, is right at 4.000 foot pounds of energy, and pretty close to .458 Win.  It pole-axes deer, DRT.  More than adequate for any North American creature on four legs or two.

Honestly, the best all-around "Fudd Gun" would be a bolt gun in .30-'06 or .308.

Held one of those today. (44 mag) it appeared to be a very nice rifle although the stock felt a little short.   Was actually trying to find a CVA Scout single shot but they were back-ordered.

30-30 will work fine. Easy to find brass and loaded ammo is cheap.

I'd go with a T/C over a Henry. But that's just me.

I'd love a Contender, 16in barrel, 30-30. Synthetic stocks. Fixed low power scope with a 3P4 reticle. 2.5x.
Possibly an old style frame just for the weight savings.  I'd like for it to be around 5lbs.

While rimless cartridges do work in single shots, a rimmed cartridge is more "correct", and therefore, Fudd-lier. For 200yd use in a single-shot rifle, the .30-30 is plenty, and really the ideal choice.
If you really feel the need for a bit more power without going all the way to .45-70, there's always .38-55 or .375 Win, but you'll not find ammo at Walmart.

ETA: the earlier Henry single shots have a recall out. From the Henry website: "Under certain conditions, it is possible that some of these rifles and shotguns may discharge without the trigger being pulled if the hammer is partially cocked and released. Henry has identified the cause of the issue, and it will be corrected by replacing various components of the fire control system."
I would assume new models have the fix in place.
There is also the issue of the heavy trigger pull (~7-8lb) required by lawyers, but numerous people have reported good results (~3-4lb) by simply replacing the double hammer / trigger spring setup with a single spring, so it's an easy fix.

35 Remington is a fun older caliber. As a bonus you can use 9mm bullets in them. We have been playing with a subsonic 35 Rem using 9mm and its been a lot of fun.

Fine looking firearms... may I ask what caliber they both are ?

Both are in .45-70.  I almost bought another Pedersoli Sharps at Christmas that was in .50-90.  I'll always regret not buying it but I am glad I didn't as life took a turn for the worst.

You can get sorta pointy plastic tipped .30-30 rounds and fill the magazine.

So just as a followup ... in my waffling, and looking for a Henry in 30-30 to buy, I stumbled across the Howa Mini 1500s that Cabelas has in the "used" section online.

Missed two of 'em in 223 for $300 each, was about to go order the Henry and checked Cabelas one more time... and now I have an always-wanted taken care of.

Scored a Howa Mini-1500 in 762x39.
