I’m looking at getting a vault door to mount to a home made steel safe. So far the doors cost almost as much as the rest of the safe. I was looking at a 3/8” door that was 4K (80x30). Does anyone know of anyplace that has less expensive good doors?

It's not 2018 anymore, bruh. Nothing that is good is cheap anymore.

I am definitely aware of that. Steel has almost doubled in price.
The reason I ask is because everything I find is a large name safe company. I’m sure there are smaller companies that aren’t as proud of their names and ask a little less. I’d rather support a small business anyways.

Is the diy safe already built? If not, I'd abandon the idea and just buy one pre-manufactured, due in part, to the reasons you're discovering.

I have two safes in that room. My stuff just doesn’t fit in it. I can’t fit a third. I can fit my stuff in a safe cut to fit that room. The only other option I came up with is having it built from block. The problem there is it would cost almost as much and make the space significantly smaller.

If you are handy enough with metal to build your own safe you might consider building your own door too? Sub out some parts to a plasma or laser cutting shop and it wouldn't be all that hard. I've been looking into it and studying what I can find. I've got a surprisingly simple TL rated Mosler safe I've picked up some inspiration from as well.

I'm planning to build my own door for a built in safe room, I can't justify the prices of commercially made doors when I know what the steel costs and I have my own CNC plasma table and other tools to work with. It will definitely take some time though!

If you are considering building your own door, I would like to point out, that there are ready made parts for bolt works which are quite commonly used in European safes.

This type is used here in many safes: https://1010security.com/7627.html (This one is not usable with a swing bolt. They do have also a basic hardplate for this bolt work.) There is also an animation on yt for this kind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOvY2WoEjxo

There is also one from M-Locks: https://www.kluis.nl/c-4426829/regelwerk/ (Sorry, only in Dutch. Company website in English: https://www.m-locks.com/products/boltworks/ . These bolt works are usable with swing and dead bolt.)

And there are for sure more manufacturers, but I can't offer sources for them. There are also more advanced bolt works available with glass and more integrated relockers, but again I can't offer sources for them.

These bolt works are prepared for a MagicModule lock (requires probably metric screws). So what's missing is the handle with a square spindle (the hole for it is already prepared to prevent excessive force applied via the handle) and some bars with bolts at the end. Suitable handles are also sold by both, but they might not suit the style you want.

M-Locks offers also an integrated relocker in the M3 bolt work, that blocks when the lock is punched away. They have also mechanisms for two locks where either both or any of them has to be unlocked to open the safe.

Btw. if you are looking only for a mount plate, MBAUSA has one: https://mbausa.com/standard-footprint-mounting-plate/

PS: Another video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci3LOuVeqzI

PPS: Another video with a safe from BosnianBill: https://youtu.be/m4ITY2il_6I?t=637 Don't listen to much what he says.

I’m not going to build my own. I’m not nearly that skilled. So far it looks like I may spend the big bucks and go with Amsec. I’m hoping to find a smaller company with equal quality that doesn’t cost 5-6k.

You decided against building your door, but another part, which can be useful, also for beefing up a door is a remote relocker.

https://1010security.com/86203-0001.html
https://1010security.com/aga-rlk.html

These are connected to a steel wire (or suitable synthetic wire) either to a glass plate in front of the lock or bolt work, or only zigzag through the door. If either the glass plate breaks or somebody cuts through the door with an angle grinder the relocker is released and when it is mounted in a suitable location it blocks the bolt work from opening. Both of these here are cross locking, i.e. the relocker bolt can be pushed back easily.

This is also a rather European part, because the relocker attached to the backplate of the lock is unknown here.

I broke down and bought the Amsec. It was a sold 1k above the others I was looking at, but I think for what you get it was the best choice.
