So I got all excited about the $200 tax going away for suppressors and SBRs.

Then I remembered that for SBRs when traveling across state lines you still have to file a 5320-20.

So, I want a 5.56 suppressed but I am specifically trying to avoid an SBR.

AFAIK my options are...

A pistol plus a suppressor and I really do not like this option as I want to use real stocks and even some cavarms and KP15 monolithic polymer lowers.

An integral suppressed upper and this option is expensive and tied to a single upper.

An upper with a suppressor pin and welded suppressor, preferably a flow through model and this option is less expensive than the previous but still tied to a single upper.

I think I'm ok with it being a single purpose upper of having the suppressor tied to a single upper.

What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Thanks.

I am in the same quandary. I have a home broewed CMMG banshee with a tucked suppressor.

I would love to SBR this but I don't want to have to deal with the issue of crossing state lines. Of course you do have to fill out the paperwork to take the suppressor so it's a moot point I guess. I find that the brace with the insert helps maintain the shape so when I use the brace it fits properly. So I just don't worry about it and treat it like an SBR. Probably after the rush is gone, if ever, I'll file the paperwork. But I don't know that I'll take the brace off.

So the scenarios you've talked about no matter what you do, you have to fill out paperwork to cross state lines. I would be happy if I was incorrect, I mean very happy, so let me know.

You do not need to fill out a 5320.20 for a suppressor. And while you do for an SBR it's once a year and it's now online in the eforms. That form is also just a notification, it's not an approval or anything.

I just SBR'd all of mine so I don't have to worry about the brace foolishness.

No .20 needed for the suppressor.

If you’re that bothered by doing a .20 once a year for the rifle. Just take the stock off and put the brace back on before traveling interstate.

ETA: Same advice for OP. Build your SBR how you want it, use it in your state however you want it. If you want to travel without needing the interstate transport requirements, then throw your upper on a pistol lower beforehand. Of the options you listed though, I’d personally go P/W suppressor before integral.

A 13.9/13.7 with a pin and weld feels a lot shorter and handier than I thought it would.

Dunno, but I would not want a pin and welded suppressor. If you are serious about keeping it one stamp, look at Griffins offerings for their rifle combo.

As far as what suppressor, 556 is an evolving game right now. And its guaranteed that as soon as you buy the latest and greatest something will come out while yours is in limbo.
I don’t like making plans for the day. Because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom.

Or you can just file a 5320.20 to any states you may visit once a year. It takes 5 minutes to do one and even less to do the rest. Email to ATF a month in advance and you’ll be gtg. I’ve traveled by air with SBRs 3 times in the last 45 days.
