Guy at the local flea market has a Plainfield M1 Carbine for sale. Looks nice, but didn’t write down S/N or inspect barrel. Has the early barrel band without bayonet lug, adjustable rear sight, and the ventilated metal handguard. Stock is in good shape, has no sling, but no rust or other obvious wear. Guy wants $700 for it, with 2 15-round and 2 30-round mags. Could probably talk him down to $600. Are Plainfield carbines good? Research says they’ll work with USGI parts and are much better than Universals, which I saw a guy sell for $500 last year.

I would prefer usgi by a long shot.  Commercial carbines have not the value or history of ww2 usgi built by not gun industry companies like inland IBM rockolla etc.  If only for a shooter probably fine.  Lots of humped carbines out there.  I would shop ee on cmp forum with 900ish patiently.  Ymmv

Well I don't consider myself much of a collector, more of a shooter. As long as it's not junk like later Universals, I think I'll see about trading one of my cheap ARs for it. Might have to buy a new top handguard though. Thanks for the info guys!

Plainfield is one of the better commercial clones.  But $700 is pretty stiff.  That’s almost Inland GI range.

I have one Plainfield and original IBM carbine..

The Plainfield is ok.. much better than the universal i owned and dumped...

Its not as accurate as my IBM carbine and does jam once in a while , but its a ok..

for that price range i would look at original... if you can snag it for 400-500 i think better price point...

I've had 2 Plainfield's over the years. 1 ran like a top, the last one I bought from a LGS was a jamomatic

$500-550 tops would be my best offer if the mags are USGI.

Here's some good info on them if your interested

I've had three or four different ones.  I say go for it...but the price is too high.  I bought my last one for, I think, $450.  And it might not be original, but it shoots soft points, which is a big plus for me.

I had a Plainsfield carbine years ago.  It looked as though it was made with all G.I. parts except the receiver.  Just as accurate as a G.I. carbine.  A couple of thousand rounds thru it and sold it to Class 3 dealer who made it into a M2 carbine.  He let me shoot it, fantastic!   Universal carbines, don't walk if offered one, run as it's just not worth the headaches.
