Looking to get my 9 year old his first rifle. Looking for a youth sized bolt action .22 that holds more than one round.  I’ve seen several that only hold one and I’d like to teach him to use the bolt but not have to reload after each shot.

My only .22 is an AR platform so I know very little about 22s. Yes I know 9 is old for a first gun around here, but my wife isn’t a gun person.

Thanks all!

Edit: didn't see the bolt action part.

How about a CZ 457 Scout? You'd be able to buy a full sized stock for it eventually if you want it to grow with him, or you can add spacers/slip on pads as he needs them.

OP,,,We were thrown out in the wild with JC Higgins semi-autos and 1000 rounds bricks of ammo. They said "go KILL Jack Rabbits". Your son will do fine.

JC Higgins semi-autos;

Remember the retractable strap that you pulled out from the buttstock

Nothing wrong with my first Ruger 10/22(still have it) when I purchased it in 1971 at 16 and also a 1996 Ruger 10/22. Ruger's are great first starter type rifles and if one wants to do most anything in customizing with them at a later time, the parts for them is limit-less.

For bolt action that use magazines, I like the Savage, Marlin and Stevens. Only thing with the Stevens is that it doesn't have the Accutrigger to save money, but honestly it's not bad. They are owned/made by Savage. It also has the same quality and great shooting of a Savage.

I have a Stevens and Marlin in 22LR. A Savage in 17HMR. All great shooters, but they do have plastic stocks. I do also use scopes on my rifles as none of these have iron sights.

My vote would be for a Henry 22 Lever action.
Quality that will last

A CZ is my plan for when mine gets old enough, though my personal preference might be for the 452 or 455 series due to my familiarity with them and preferred safety mechanism (which is entirely subjective).

But I'm biased, I already have two 452s myself

That CZ Scout looks great, but if funds allow?

Can you buy a standard size rifle and put a shorter stock on it, or cut down standard sized OEM stock and then do an upgrade after market stock in a few years?

A Tikka or CZ .22 standard sized gun will last the kid and his grandkids a lifetime.

Winchester model 69, 5 shot magazine, all steel and walnut great sights if you get the target model, $250-$300 used, a classic. Made from late 30’s to 1963. Look on Gunbroker.

They don’t make them like that any more.Attachment Attached File
