My supervisor uses 4F for chute deployment in model rocketry. Is there a comparable substitute for this application?

I always used 3F black powder. I tried testing Pyrodex  and Triple 7 and they just did not have the same push as black powder.
They work great in firearms not so much in rocketry. They act more like smokeless powder when not contained in a cylinder.
For flights over 20,000 feet burn rates for all powders go way down. Most people use co2 charges now.

Why not just use 4F?

If 4 f is hard to find you can take some higher F powder and make a finer powder out of it in a mortar and pestle. Works for flash pans in a pinch , might be fine for the model rocket.
