Old thread. I reread some pages. I can’t remember when I bought mine. So I pulled rear butt pad. I don’t have dates on the inside. Unless I’m looking in the wrong area. Mines an A3. Built in Alabama as far as the receiver is stamped. It’s not a NATO model. I don’t have a lot of rounds through it. Maybe 1000’s. I rotate it in ..How do I read the serial number. I don’t remember who manufactured the receiver. I think it was a transition of old stock vs new company. Thanks Attached File Wardawg Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Here’s the bottom of my receiver. I’ve seen Sabers marked in this spot. Attached File |

You do not need to worry about cracking stocks. As you can already tell, your stock also lacks the "date wheel" that is present on the more recent production stocks. That is many years before the 2019-2022 era guns that started to pop up with cracking issue on the stock. I've seen about 4 or 5 of these rifles with Vltor receivers but lacking the typical manufacturer's marking under the receiver. I just know they are Vltor made but I don't know why the marking isn't there. |

They likely started this change to unmarked receivers towards the end of the 6USAxxx prefix production. |

No. And, the M Star stocks are actually better in several regards especially the E4 stocks which offer NATO mag with left hand ejection more rail mounting options better texture more sling options a finger groove on the grip the butt plate is better the storage compartment is larger etc. A fourth gen msar stock will fit on an Aug and all the E4 stocks are Gen 4. I actually consider it a nice upgrade to an Aug yes really seriously. The last shot bolt hold open is different so you either need to switch the last shot bolt hold open over or have a matching trigger pack to go with the stock or modify the trigger pack which is easy. |

I'd really love an aug, but im just not into anything about us production guns. I think the cast frame and the 1/9 nitrided barrel are just as bad. 20" is too long... Whats up with the 16" police model prebans? Are they imported/forged/chromed/ 1:7? Is there any way to put a rail where the scope is? |

The newest AUG's are supposedly transfering to 1/7 twist (steyr currently blowing out 1/9 barrels). The nitride barrels are CHF from Austrian steel blanks brought in from Steyr Austria, actually very well regarded by people shooting them. SIG 550 and LWRCs also use CHF Nitride. |

Even the A3 and A3M1 sold in Austria have cast receivers. Forged receiver is a US thing on Sabre Defense and early to mid production Vltor. (I think they switched to cast around 2019 or so) Not sure about the newest Stg77 A1 MOD (similar to our A3M2). All preban Austrian Steyr AUG and military Austrian AUG have 1:9 twist, CHF, CL barrels. AUG LMG barrels do come in both 1:9 and 1:7. For the preban ones, from what I've owned and have seen, all of them were 1:7. To mount 1913 on the older design such as the AUG A1, since it is an integrated scope to receiver design, the only option I know of would be Clawgear AUG 1913 rail modular scope mount. Look for early production AUG A3 if you want 1913 receiver w/ CL barrels, though still will be 1:9. Early ones will be Sabre Defense marked, and those AUG A3 will have CL. But will be button rifled. Mid production will be Vltor made AUG A3, with FN CHF CL barrel 1:9. I don't know the serial number range on when exactly they swapped to nitride but at least my "6USAxxx" AUG A3 had FN CHF CL barrel. |

As far as barrels i'd rather chromed buttoned 7 days a week over forged nitrided. As of the last time i checked, they fixed stock issue and simultaneously doscontinued a3m1 - this is my favorite model cosmetically. So i domt get it is the scope body literally one piece with the frame? |

We also don't know what other stealth changes they make that affect reliability. |

I have a SABRE AUG in the 2USA range. Great gun! It dawned on me me reading this thread I have had it 16ish years now. Damn time flys. Around four thousand or so rounds through it at least. Probably many more, I just don’t keep track of the rounds. Took it to one class, all cops with AR’s of many flavors and me with my AUG. Anyway, if I had one in the time frame they had stock issues I would just shoot it and contact Steyr and get a replacement stock if it broke. That being said, it’s not my primary rifle, so it’s not super critical to me. |

They are not making new AUGs that have the scope housing as one homogenous integral piece of the receiver, as was done on the original AUG A1's Let me know if that makes sense and answers your questions. Sven Manticore Arms Hi i was hoping the scope can be removed from preban aug and replaced with a rail. Only want preban for the better quality There are no preban models of AUG with a removable top rail. The USR (A2) is as close as you are going to get, and the mount system of the optic/top rail is not as repeatsble/good as the current A3 and later models. Not sure where you see the dividing line on “preban quality” ending so cant really comment on that. |

(Edit: Ok so technically there were 1,250 Special Receivers imported only as receivers, so there were some parts guns assembled prior to 1994, but rare & expensive, just like now.) I have a USR that I modified into a no-ban A2, but I leave the factory Swarovski optic on it 100% of the time. The rails/track can get loose from dismounting. Later I managed to find an A1 that was a 1990s LE import, so it has the bolt carrier roller (which is a good thing to have, for just a little less friction). The main 2 things you’d want for maximum quality IMHO would be a good chrome-lined barrel and a stock that isn’t prone to cracking. The receivers on all of AUG production are fine, whether cast or forged. It mainly just depends on how you want the top of the receiver configured. As far as barrel, I believe the hammer forged Austrian chrome lined barrels are the best, but Sabre Defence also made a really excellent button-rifled chrome lined barrel, as found on the early U.S. A3 rifles from 2009-2013. (These can be visually distinguished by their gray parkerizing.) Then FN did some with chrome (including some rare 1:7 twist) but later they got terrible and the chrome was flaking, so it’s difficult to know if a random chrome lined FN barrel you find is any good. There are also the USR barrels from ADI Lithgow, but they’re all heavy profile. (They can be turned down though.) Then just avoid the stocks produced for a few recent years (indicated here in this thread) and you should be GTG. |

I am always amazed at how well those nitride 1:9 barrels shoot. Mine shoot 77gr pills very well so maybe it's 1:899...or something. Since Steyr was selling their 16" nitrided 1:9 barrels for $349, I bought some as spares. I put one in my AUG just to try out at 50 yards and the group was very good and amazingly on paper, just a little low. So I took it out to 100 yards with a load my original barrel really likes... Attached File The rifle was zero'ed with this load and the original barrel was putting them in the middle. I was amazed that the new barrel printed this group at 100 yards TOTALLY UN-ZERO'ED. That's pretty good precision for barrels made years apart. |

And if things couldn't get worse, it looks like Steyr is halting sales of products as well as all repairs for products in California. Steyr halts sales and repair to CA in Jan 2026. Looks like Steyr found a way to avoid having to replace a bunch of those defective stocks... |

I'm not sure that is official Steyr Policy, not familiar with warranty law, but I would imagine it could invite litigation against Steyr USA. Its possibly someone told this gunsmith they aren't doing California stuff right now, and was interpreted by this Gunsmith as they are never servicing California guns ever again. I would wait to see what Steyr officially says before getting the pitchforks out. |

Steyr and many other manufacturer's are doing exactly the same thing because of CA's burdensome new laws that could put a small outfit like SteyrUSA out of business. I don't blame them, yes it sucks for CA residents but that's what you get when those kinds of laws are passed. |

Move out of CA to a free state. The great weather and natural beauty of CA pale in comparison to the ability to have real individual liberty. |

That is good news, a rare admission of a screw up on Steyr's side. Grant is definitely going to have a bad week though. |

We have no idea what caused it or if it is fixed, all we really know is the stock cracking is so popular we have something like 20+ people, in this thread over 5 years, posting proof of failure. For a common mode catastrophic failure of a firearm revealed only by consumer images is unheard of. I can't think of a single firearm that was rendered effectively inoperable with such frequency of public outings, with proof, really ever. |

I agree it IS concerning and it would have been MUCH better if Steyr came out with some reasonable explanation. I do not think the issue is fake or imaginary. I have seen dozens, maybe hundreds of pictures of broken and exploded Glock pistols, especially the 40 cal models, yet after 35 years, I've only ever personally seen a cracked slide once in an armorers class. The internet has a way of magnifying things. |

Well, it seems I just discovered I am in the crack club. Bought new in 2022. Mfg date 5/20. Probably less than 300 rounds through it. Just emailed them. I did not see resolution in anyone's posts in this thread. Forgive me if I missed it, but how did Steyr take care of you after you contacted them? |

From what I am seeing, call their warranty line and pray you get someone who cares. If you are the original owner you should be covered under warranty. However, their warranty team has gone down hill since Steyr was sold. They should send you a replacement stock, you probably will need to pay for shipping. It looks like other warranty claim systems are largely unmonitored. There is a YouTube video from Desert Coyote on YouTube where he is months into a warranty issue on his less than a year old gun. |

Years ago when Steyr still owned them I got a brand new straight pull .22 scout rifle that had a loose barrel and shot more of a pattern than a group. I could walk the shots around by applying pressure to the forend. They wanted me to pay for shipping and I ended up arguing with them till they agreed to send me a return label. The barrel is better but still loose so it's garbage that's a sidelined project for me at this point. |

I just received my replacement stock. Less than a week turnaround on a crack verified stock on a 2020 manufactured gun. New stock is marked 2024. Everything on replacement seems perfect. Now I just need to go shoot it (any excuse to shoot my AUG will do Now it's time to install a Manticore Switchback, Port Cover and Heresy Safety selector. |

Id say it was design choices that mixed badly with specific ammo types. Back in the early 90's it became known that lead bullets and Glocks polygonal rifled barrels were a bad combo resulting in some blown guns. Then the very generous chamber dimensions and 40cal reloads were also causing kabooms. Kaboomed Glocks were all over the internet. Also I have personally taken part in two Glock recalls where I sent numerous guns to Glock Inc. depending on the SN. The first was back in 1990 iirc when the black colored metal frame parts got swapped out for the now common silver parts. Then, around 2002 or '03 a certain SN range of guns had a 1% (or less) chance of developing frame rail cracks and Glock put out a quiet recall notice. I sent in 3 pistols that came back with new frames with a "1" added to the SN. Companies now days never seem to admit and defect and will just let CS sort it out one at a time instead of a good-faith recall. I do NOT know what happened at Steyr but it sounds like a defect that should have been addressed with a limited recall based on SN. I DO think the internet echo chamber has a way of magnifying things out of proportion though. |

Mine is green but from the many sources I have read including here, it seems there is no color that was unaffected during the covid crap mfg dates 2020-2022ish. My new one is a 24 mfg and it is perfect so far. Haven't shot it much yet but I aim to remedy that |
