Been curious about this setup say a 12-12.5" 6.5 with a 129gr SST at 2300fps or so if applicable would be a hell of a hog setup.

some guys at the 65grendel site are using shorter barrels

I’ll form 1 this eventually. It’s a great setup...

I’ve only shot steel with my 12.5” Ballistic Advantage, and out to 500 yards it hits with a loud, solid thwack.  Depending on what bullet you choose, you could get full expansion out to 3-400 yards.  It can be supersonic out to 800 yards or so depending on conditions.  I’m getting a very repeatable sub-1.5 MOA with Hdy American Gunner 123 HPBT.  Muzzle blast isn’t bad without a suppressor but I use the suppressor most of the time.

It’s probably my favorite upper.  With a 1-6 or 1-8 optic with holdover features you can zero the center cross hairs at 25 yards and second crossing is 275 yards and a max ordinate of plus 6 inches and close enough to many pre-set 556 reticle holdovers out to 700 yards.  With a mil-dot reticle, 5 mils holdover on a 25/275 zero will get out to 600+ yards.  The +1 mil is a close enough hold under point for 50-175 yard targets.

What kind of velocity do y'all get with 120-130s? If 2300 isn't hard to reach i'm about to sell my BCM SPR upper to fund a 12.5" 6.5 grendel. The one experience i have with the BA premium hanson series actually shoots pretty well. Got 3/4ths MOA from a 110gr Vmax @ 2050fps in my 8.3" blackout.

Seems to be a good hog setup, yeah.

12" barrel. Hits hard, and still a nice weight for carrying around all night.

I shoot at 3000-4000 feet elevation in warm conditions and use 2350 in my ballistics calculator for 123 ELDs and SSTs and things have lined up out to 550 yards.  I haven’t confirmed with chronograph.

6.5 Grendel SBR is a poor choice for hog hunting, better would be 6.8 SPC all things considered.

I have to disagree. Better reloading components across the board, more brass manufacturers, and 10x better selection of bullets. Case capacity is roughly the same, given the parameters i'd choose 6.5G 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

Back on topic. Anyone metered a 12.5" 6.5 grendel? I'd care to imagine it's pretty damn loud? Given the turn around right now giving though to picking up a vox s and running the griffin alpha mount on it like i'm going to the Turbo K.

Please elaborate on how the 0.3mm bullet diameter makes a significant difference and how one round is good, or "better", and how that difference makes the other "poor".

Feel free to post up ballistic charts, energies, etc.

Thanks

6.5G seems to hit them really hard, far better than 300blk or 5.56. I'm getting DRTs and exit wounds at a higher rate anyway.

Staying in the Ar15 platform, from everything I've read it's one of the best options available. 6.8 might have a sliver of advantage under 300 yards, while the 6.5 has an advantage at distance if all the threads around here are true.

Either way it's a good round, and the cheap steel Wolf ammo for plinking and training is what pushed me into the Grendel vs the similar ballistics of the 6.8. 25c blasting is nice!

Yeah, I like my 11.5" 6.8, it's been my compact deer gun for a few years.
I built it before the cheap Wolf 6.5 came out....

I'm not sure for 12.5" there is anything more versatile than a 6.5 129gr SST at 2300fps. It's simply absurd for that short of a platform. It's not magic by any means but staying super sonic to nearly 1000yds in a short package like that is impressive. That might be overestimating the capability of the cartridge under normal pressure, but still. It can largely fill the roll of a do it all carbine that IMHO is superior to anything 5.56 offers 16" and below. Practically speaking if the 6.8 spc had the brass and bullet supply that the grendel had i'd lean towards it, but it simply doesn't. The .277 cal bullet selection still sucks and are likely more expensive. At 27 cents a round for 129gr SST it makes a whole lot of sense for the intended purpose. Thinking a Vox S with the alpha mount would compliment it pretty well.

2300ish is about right from the testing of 6.5G. I've done in 12.5" I've only tested the Hornady Custom 123gr SST, but it had great expansion in clear gel, as well as the Hornady Black with the ELD Match. The ELD had better accuracy in my guns over the Custom:

12.5" barrel, bangs steel out to 500 yards with boring consistency.

It's an old Bushnell Elite 1-6.5.  The BDC reticle is meant for 5.56 but it just happens to line up well with Wolf steel case.  Which is lucky, because the Ballistic Advantage barrel actually shoots that stuff pretty so.  I love being able to shoot cheap ammo.
