I have searched the entirety of the Internet, several times over the last year, and they seem to be rather uncommon nowadays. I’ve got a lead on an original tubular stock (Minimi stock) but if I commit to that I’d like to find a matching top cover also.

I’m part of a living history group too. We haven’t done anything as late as Gulf War 1991, but maybe one day. lol

I can't say I have ever seen one even in all my time searching for M249 parts.

My guess is they probably went into Cap'n Crunch and got demilled when they wore out and were unserviceable, or that covers got modified to add the picatinny rail and move the rear sight back.

That’s what I’m thinking happened to most of the US ones. I’ve only seen photos of a couple that looked like a rail had been added later, and I’m not sure they were US. I see the newer railed covers commonly where the rail is integral.

Many countries use these, but I guess nobody here is importing plain old top covers.

Dang. I had one on a dummy gun that I sold last year. Pretty sure it has traded hands a few times since then. I didn't think anyone would have wanted it more than a railed cover.

I think bowman might have minimi kits incoming with those stocks,  may have the old topcovers too

This guy had a couple...  granted, that was almost a decade ago...  but maybe he knows where you can find one.

Not that it matters, but I need an old mini handguard.  And if your stock falls through, I have 2 of the old tubular stocks

Considering the rail is riveted on, if you really wanted to it shouldnt be too hard to remove the rail and weld the mounting holes shut.

The one model I have seen in person (like what came on my M249S) is integral and the whole thing was CNC machined from billet. It also has a cavity milled under the center of the rail for weight reduction, so that’d have to be welded-up if the rail was machined off. Looks like there are other additional minor profile differences, and the rear sight was more forward on the original.

Maybe if I could find one with an add-on rail, but I’ve never seen one offered, and it’s uncommon even to find good photos of an add-on rail like that. Unsure if that was the initial USGI solution for adding a rail, or not. They may have switched over to the one-piece units after a trial or something. None of this seems to be well documented online.

Yeah the thing that stood out on mine was the rear sight placement being a couple inches forward

I have been looking for an old school top cover for YEARS.  The old parts are extremely hard to find and getting harder by the day.  I have everything else, even a hen's teeth Belgian made NOS barrel.  I just need the top cover.

Just texted someone that helped me with some 249 parts for my FRTsaw. I'll let you know if he has anything.

@ProbableColtAddict To be clear, you can't actually shoot your M249S in the configuration you have it pictured, right?  The Para skeleton stock plate has no buffer built in, and the recoil guide and buffer spring (yellow) won't work in the semi-auto M249S...

I do not shoot those parts; they are for collecting only.  However, I don't see why I couldn't use them.  Why do you say that an early buffer won't work?

I have those parts for mine and I don't see how it could be properly installed in the internals of an M249S.

Here's some M249 stock trivia for you.  When ACE Riflestocks (now ACE limited) got started, Bob had purchased a shit ton of surplus M249 stocks.  He pulled the front trunions off of them and replaced them with an ACE Universal Folding Trunion that allowed anyone to bolt them up to anything with 10-32 screw holes on 5/8" centers.  That was ACE's first and only product line at the time, circa 1999-2001.  Bob first produced the 9" model shown in the top two pics, then brought out the 10" later, shown on the Saiga-12 below.
