From the last test, it seemed the 10" SBR velocity of M855 may not have been enough to penetrate this Model #1078 plate. So I developed some reduced velocity M855 and M855A1 loads to see if we could find a threshold for PE plates to actually stop M855/A1 :D

Can Armor Stop M855 or M855A1? @AR500 Armor® 1078 Level III

I bought 100 or so projectiles from American Reloading when they had them. I've also come across small lots for sale on here and other places that require a bend over :D

This armor is rated level 3 but it couldn't stop a m885/a1 going well below 2800fps. What's your take on it?

Level III only encompasses M80 Ball. No Level III PE plate is officially rated for m855/M855a1

At short range m855/a1 will have a speed over 3000fps which level 3 isn't rated to stop. a normal level 3 would have stop your downgraded m855/a1 without any problems. That's what bugged me.

Not really. It all comes back to the rated threats and build materials.

Level III plates aren't rated for 5.56 rounds. Level III plates built from steel are vulnerable to high velocity impacts (M193 -55gr 5.56). Level III plates built from UHMWP/Dyneema are vulnerable to steel penetrators like M855 and M855A1. Level III plates built with ceramics normally do very well against both types of 5.56 threats, though M993 might penetrate.

Level IV steps it up and stops almost all rifle rounds including purpose built AP designs.

RMA's 1145 plate (aka same strike face as 1155), and AR500's Level IV (Tencate plate). I've love to have more to test to see if that statement goes into other high dollar plates, but the two I got cost me an arm and leg. Although I have something that might work just as well and am waiting to test it.

Interesting. Got links to your videos?

I've wondered how an M855A1 projectile would perform pushed from a .223 WSSM or 22-250.

The current standard barrel twist rates for 22-250, will not stabilize the M855A1 :( I tried, and they keyholed.

Great videos. Any tests with M80A1?  I've wondered how it would perform from a 300WM or 300 RUM.

I got AR500's Tencate plate to stop it from 300WM,  but couldn't stop 150gr FMJ:

RMA's 1199 plate, it didn't hold against the 300WM version, but it stopped the normal M80A1:
