Fascinating! Thanks for the detailed write-up, and I am looking forward to part II. Where did you purchase it from?

Thanks for the great read, so far. I find this to be very interesting, even though I've never owned a P38 (or any other Walther).

Tagging this for updates. I like a good P-38 story.

I have an EG reworked P.08. Started out as a WWI pistol and ended up in Stettin as a police issued pistol.
Imported by Coles. |

Is the bluing different over the locking block relief cuts? The Beretta 92/Taurus 92/Girsan clone copied much of the P-38 design and have near a near identical locking block system.

Yes sir, I mention that in the text. My personal belief is that the bluing took differently in those areas due to the hardening process. It seems to be a common thing on Eastie made slides.

Very cool. I have a P08 from 39 and it’s gorgeous. Perfectly machined like aesthetics was the primary goal.

I've always head talk of them , but have never seen one before. I assumed there were some just based on the discussions over the years and Germans being Germans and all.

Given the millions of surplus pistols available post WWII, I wonder why the EG's went to so much trouble to produce such a well made but intricate pistol.
Was it Commie East German pride? Was it, "Hey, look at this machinery. Let's make some more?" Was it a make work issue. Finally, the finish work of this pistol does not come close to the workmanship of the EG Makarovs. It is very un-German to produce such an unfinished pistol. |

I find it hard to believe that ANY German that applied a serial number that poorly would not have turned right around and jumped off the tallest building they could find.

That's just how it was in the DDR at that time. They produced Quality equipment but aesthetics took a back seat to function, just as it was in the Soviet Union during WWII. |
