I have an 870 police magnum and the trigger has developed a lot of rust on it. I used 0000 steel wool but it’s still pitted. What are my options since Remington isn’t making police trigger groups right now?

If you used steel wool to remove the rust you need to use something like Tetra Gun Blue to put a protective finish on the metal and light coat of gun oil at the very least.  You could always pursue your options with a gunsmith ... cerakote    or probably the best is :   https://black-t.com/

or electroless nickle or nickle, or chrome  etc.

Probably try and find a used trigger assembly, or leave it and keep oil on it when in long term storage. All of my defensive shotguns have marks from riding in the back of the truck, so I wouldn’t sweat it if it were mine.

I was looking at perma blue/super blue. Is cold bluing durable enough to be used on a trigger?

You could always touch it as needed as you wear it out, but that isn’t going to help the pitting, unfortunately.

GunpartsCorp has several listed, anywhere from about 7 bucks to 22 bucks.

Numrich has come through with shotgun parts for me in the past. It would probably be my first place to look. Nothing like looking at an exploded schematic and choosing just the parts you need.

I would use a paint pen and paint it black for metal protection.

Check with my buddy over at

He may have what you want but just not listed here on his page.

If you have arrested the rust and the pitting is what really bothers you (I get it, I am OCD too) then maybe bead blast the trigger and hit it with a little cold blue. That will give it a “parked” look and hide the imperfections.

Perhaps a company like Numeric Gun Parts. If you can find an aluminum trigger assembly, most of the 80's and newer P's used them. If yours is steel, it's most likely an older gun (non-flex tab) and any older 870 trigger assy would/should work. If reconditioning the current rusted one, maybe bead blast and Guncoat or any other type of baked finish.
