I made subs for my threaded k98 in 8x57 with red dot. Very quiet and accurate. Should be fine in a mos in as well.

Trail Boss... clean burning. Safe to work with. Use it in 30-06 subs. Good stuff.

Yup. I use Trail Boss for reloading 225gr Subsonics for a .308 Bolt gun.

Titegroup in small amounts can also accomplish this.  I have used 3.0 grains for cast 55 grain "cat's sneeze" loads in .223, I'm sure it can be scaled up a little.

Definitely try trail boss.  It's perfect for working up reduced power loads in rifles, and very forgiving.  Don't try using pistol powders, with the low volume velocities will be inconsistent, and with such tiny volumes if you are not extremely careful it is easy to make a mistake and double charge a cartridge or worse.

Somewhere around 10 grains should work.   If it were me, I'd start around 12gr and work down.

I have loaded 7.62x54R with 9grs of Unique, and 7grs of BE-86.  (165gr coated lead bullet)

Both worked fine in my Mosin.  I think they are sub-sonic but I have neither a chronograph nor a suppressor, so I am not positive.

I've used C. E. Harris' "The Load" in 7.62X54R and other calibers (13 gn Red Dot).  If you haven't read Harris' stuff, google it.  It's worth the time.  I've also gone lower, to the point of having the bullet not completely exit the barrel.

I've also used similar loads of Unique in various calibers.  Used to shoot a fair amount of 110 gn cast lead over Unique in a .308 Win Mauser sporter.  What was fun, was I was able to get a 25 yard zero with that load, using the tip of the duplex reticle as a "post" reticle, while leaving the cross hairs alone for my 165 gn 100 yard zero.  So I could plink for cheap at 25 yards, without changing my hunting zero.

I hope the Trail Boss works for you. I know several people including myself that have had no luck with it sub or super sonic in the 54R.

It works great in my 30-30 with cast loads and as others have said .308 Win too. Just no luck in the 54R.

I personally use 6gr Bullseye for 1075fps (165gr cast bullet). But we only shoot 50 yards and the target is a 8" round swinger so 2" groups are acceptable.

BTW: I  shoot all powder coated now like the pretty red ones posted above.

You can also try 2400 if you can find it.

It was unobtanium for a while.

I use 17-24gr in 30-06 light loads in my bolt gun with 150gr to 200gr cast lead bullets.

Great for target practice.

The problem is the C. E. Harris "the load" and or 17 to whatever grains of 2400 is not going to be sub sonic. The OP is specifically asking for sub sonic.

I used trail boss but switched to IMR SR powders.  Then I got bit in the butt when Hodgdon dropped them.  They were very good for subsonic cast bullets in military rifles.   I had fun with my beat up Krag and Finn M39.

I'm using the 160gr Lee 2R TL. My M39s range from .3105 to .3115 groove diameter my 91-30 is .313+

My bullets drop .3125 to slightly under .313

When I used Lee A-Lox I would not size them at all. The velocity as mentioned above is 1075fps. All bullet holes at 50 yards are perfectly round.

Now that I powder coat I still don't size them for the 91-30 but for the M39s I size them .311 BEFORE powder coating and don't resize afterwards. I'm basically too darn cheap to buy a .312 sizing die.

BTW: I don't waste gas checks on sub sonic bullets even though the bullet I'm using is designed for use with them BUT doing so very well could improve accuracy. I don't know if it will improve stability but it certainly won't hurt to try.

My friend did this load for his kid's to shoot his Fin Mosin

Its fun to shoot and no key hole. They looked stabilized.

I actually think that Hodgdon has a .223 load using titegroup.  I loaded up a few rounds of it years ago to see what it would do.  Even without a suppressor it's pretty quite but does turn ar into a single shot rifle.

Edit-Just looked it up they do.  3.1gr titegroup with a 55gr FMJ makes 1,064 fps with a 4,000CUP.  Compared to a max load of varget that makes 49,000 cup.  I think you'd be safe even with a double load of titegroup, unless a double load is going to take it 13 times higher pressure than 3.1gr load.
