There are some cheap 16 inch 870 barrels on GB. Trying to think of a use for one. Maybe have one threaded for a choke tub and thread/solder on a breacher tube to make legal length. But that would run the cost up. Maybe not worth it.
Leave it as is for a long SBS. Not much different than a 18 inch regular shotgun.
Shorten to 12 or 14 and resolder the front sight on. (rifle sights)

Am I missing anything? I don't need one but they keep taunting me.

I personally wouldn't made a 16" SBS, as you stated still pretty close to 18" which you can have without all the headache. If the barrels are cheap why not? cut it down more, work on the sights....... throw it on an 870 once you get it Form1ed. But you could do the same thing with a 30" barrel.

would be cool on a tac-14. might be able to use a regular pistol grip?

I did what you're talking about (cut down and move front sight) on my SBS. was annoying but worth it I think.

If you have an untaxed 870, and a 16" barrel, are you in constructive possession of an untaxed SBS?

How cheap is cheap?
Back when Meijer sold guns, I bought some closeout Mossberg 500 18.5" cylinder bores for $19.99.

If it was one of those deals where you could do all the work yourself and you had the chokes/brake whatever maybe it would be worth it but they don't seem like a super good deal to me. You can get the Mossberg 18" barrels for $100 without even trying I am sure they go on sale for less. You can even buy the Barrel with breacher attached for $170.
