Quoted: Super excited to see how this project goes. Makes me wish I still had that m224a1 bipod for you. Anyways, I got mine together for the first time last night. https://i.postimg.cc/PxsS46pT/20240728-234843.jpg Andddd I am jealous. |

Quoted: Made some more progress. Got most of the firing mechanism in. Still working on the firing pin guide and firing pin. I have to cut the slot for the firing pin activator to sit in. And work on the detent and detent positions on the selector. https://i.postimg.cc/VvcMpLpQ/Selector-and-Firing-Pin.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/sXMwsXTM/Firing-Pin-and-Guide-WIP.jpg This mechanism has the capability to fire selectively, correct? Not just arm/safe? |
|
Quoted: Don't tease us with the 3D printed rounds. I'm documenting the development of them and will publish a guide and files when I'm done. At least I can start some live fire testing now and stop fiddling around with prototypes. I've very confident in my design even though it hasn't been tested yet. Someone else claims they have been successfully launching fully 3d printed rounds, but that kinda sounds like shooting nerf footballs out of an antitank cannon. Mine have a steel stem and are filled most of the way with concrete. I try to design all my ammo(mostly 40mm) to take full power loads |
|
Quoted: This mechanism has the capability to fire selectively, correct? Not just arm/safe? Yes. It's a clone of the m224 trigger mechanism. Safe, trigger and drop fire modes. The selector holds the sear either up (safe), down (drop fire), or not at all (trigger). The mechanism is more tricky than it appears. The tube that the sear goes around actually rides up and down in the handle as well which allows the firing pin activator to move the firing pin back and forth. It took me a while to understand how resetting the handle in trigger fire mode worked. I have been tweaking the geometry to avoid binding. Getting to a place that I can 3d print the mechanism and try it out |

Quoted: Impressive work! Good thing you checked the sizing prior to machining the cup! This will probably be one of the coolest 60mm builds out there. Do you have a bipod to go with that baseplate? I have m170 bipod as well (this is how I got some dimensions for the tube, as it allowed me to calibrate the photos). After I get the cup and tube done, I plan on modeling a baseplate based on the one I have. I do wonder how well a baseplate could be casted vs forged/billet and machined. |
|
Quoted: I bet a decent baseplate could be welded up from some cnc cut steel or aluminum. The socket would probably have to be machined or something. Could probably use a service like sendcutsend to get a nice laser cut triangle and then have them bend the vertices down to function as "feet". Simple series of index pins cut into middle of your baseplate to align the machined socket portion. Machined socket and lasered plate arrive, nice weld to the socket/plate and youre all done. Ive considered doing one for my 81mm to just have a light weight baseplate for traveling |
| I saw a foreign 60mm Mortar at the local surplus store, it has the device on end cap to allow drop firing or trigger fired, 2 legged bipod, not an M2 or M19 US copy of Brandt. Missing baseplate, not sure if it was for sale or not. Sarco has the repro M2/M19 stamped steel square baseplates. |

Just saw this on sale, thought someone here might be interested. 60mm Sling |

Quoted: I've located a stash of ww2 60mm M5 mortar bipods and am attempting to negotiate purchasing them. is this something that people would be interested in if I can secure them? No one is making more of them for us civilians. But price would be the determining factor. At 1000-1500 I bet you'd sell them pretty well, but I've seen a few sit at the 2500-3000 mark with baseplates. I know of at least 2 people with registered 60mm mortars that are using homemade bipods and would love to have an original. And a few more that are working on cups and barrels with no bipods in hand. Sarco still has baseplates for now. So that is good |

I'm still negotiating price so we'll see if I can make this happen. |
| As SGT-fish said if the price is right, id love one, just released my diy 60mm design, and working with another developer on a more aesthetically pleasing and easier to build v2, with a diy bipod in the works but a real one would be amazing. But with my current investment into the diy setup being around 1000, id have a hard time justifying more than like 1500 |

Quoted: finally got some of the stuff I was waiting for..shipping killed the cost though. PM me if anyone needs one. https://i.postimg.cc/9fhPhJwm/20250603-211048.jpg Do you still have any available? That is quite the score. I haven’t seen them around for a bit. |

Quoted: It's been a while but I have a few updates. I acquired a complete m224. I have disassembled everything and 3d scanned everything and rebuilt all my cad models to be exact replicas of the parts. I'm working on the final touches for my cad models and then will be 3d printing everything again to make sure the parts are all drop in replacements. I will then work on modifications to make a version for the m224a1. https://i.postimg.cc/rsnJq9rL/PXL-20250902-065258542-MP.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/nrc28WMk/PXL-20250907-204106507-MP.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/qRGw5rBq/PXL-20250907-204214647-MP.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/9M21b0hs/PXL-20250907-204312903-MP.jpg If you want to send me all the scans/files I can have whatever you want made in just about any material. |

My bad, got a little too excited and forgot the inconel tube was only for M224A1/M225A1. Still, awesome find! |
|
Quoted: Nope, it's a complete m224 not m224a1, so no inconel barrel. But yes, it's pretty much complete (just missing the distance gauge in the handle when being used in trigger fire mode). Already got the Form 1 approved to assemble it. https://i.postimg.cc/wvNx8Dw4/PXL-20250613-045410894-MP.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/CLShXBkJ/PXL-20250810-073423641-MP.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/5Ng4V4mJ/PXL-20250819-060251000-MP.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/ZRztN2Lj/PXL-20250911-055111853-MP.jpg Damn, that's pretty bad ass. |

Out of curiosity, how much would they cost for the 60mm version?

Yes and no. The barrel was saw chopped right off the cup instead having a hole the diameter of the bore drilled into it. The barrel was re threaded and a very thin adaptor was made to take up the space between the current barrel and the cup. But there was no bar or anything else inserted into the barrel. Should be good enough to do charge 1 loads. But I wouldn't try and do a full load. I have the original remnant that was left in the cup coming to me and will be looking at getting a new barrel made (probably out of inconel). The amount of machining that is required to make the cooling fin cuts would be very expensive (it's actually one continuous cut instead of rings) |

Watervliet We have the only production facility of it's kind in the world. Not the US. The world. There will be a second facility with similar capabilities coming online probably within the next year. |
| So are you entering the barrel-making market, @Ben? DD/Vega sells M2 tubes for $1500. |

The amount of machining that is required to make the cooling fin cuts would be very expensive (it's actually one continuous cut instead of rings) That's a neat fact about the rings!!! And Inconel is definitely bragging rights. I'm curious how much that costs... I'm not sure what grade they (Watervliet) use, but 718 is common in my industry (nuclear) for its hot strength. I am guessing inconel is used on the M224A1 mostly to improve rate of fire. Most of the room-temperature strength of 718 can be achieved with cheaper 41xx steels (Comparison Here) but inconel wins out when the temps go up. We also like it for the corrosion resistance, but that's probably not as relevant here. |

Quoted: So are you entering the barrel-making market, @Ben? DD/Vega sells M2 tubes for $1500. It isn't the top of the priority list, but as the current multi million dollar project finishes getting into full swing, mortars are on the top three list for further pursuit, alongside recoilless rifles. |
