I'm working really hard to stop buying different guns and start shooting an awful lot more. I decided to go with 11 and 1/2 in AR pistol for my main defense rifle. I will not be purchasing a suppressor in the near future. I'm looking for thoughts about a flash hider versus a muzzle brake for this gun. not really so concerned about brands and models but what would you recommend for a muzzle device on an 11 and a half inch unsuppressed AR pistol for a primary defensive gun

Blast can. If you miss the perp the blast will cook him.

Flash hider. Brakes on short barrels are obnoxious.

Or a linear comp of some sort.

Disregard beer belly

25 yards held the pin a little high on the steel and 10 rounds as fast as I could go (not very fast) easy to stay on target and ring the steel....10 in plate

I prefer a device that pushes everything forward on a short gun

Surefire Warden on guns not wearing one of my cans.

Other option is a Noveske KX5 or something similar

What's that Warden like at night or even dusk?

Why no suppressor?

Whatever I need to mount a can on it. Screw noise

I have not built it yet, but have a Strike Industries Venom on my 11.5" upper. No can coming for me. If too loud (Indoor range is where I go), I will swap it out for a blast can.

Dead Air 3 Prong

No ping and your shooting friends will thank you for not buying a brake. Also, you’re ready for a Sandman, Nomad, or other brand w/ Keymo when you change your mind on suppressors. It will happen.

That and the Surefire Warden/Brake combo is expensive as it is. May as well get setup for a can for the cost of the Warden and brake/comp.

I have a closed tine flash hider on mine, I didn't go with a brake as was concerned about noise unsuppressed as I've read short 5.56 guns are very loud. Honestly it's not bad, and while I haven't shot them back to back, it didn't seem much louder than my 16" with a a2. It's not even remotely as loud as my 16" 308 with a brake. As smooth as it shoots with the right size a5 buffer, I'm not sure how much a comp/brake would help anyways.

Any comp that also pushed the noise forward

Shot next to a guy with a slime bill era bushmaster with a compensator
The sheriff got a heck of a deal for his tac team after the law ran out

It was like getting hit with a small hammer every time
He pulled the trigger
They finally put him at the end of the firing line because
no one wanted to shot next to him

Instructor pointed out to his boss that the tac team was going
to have hearing issues if they ever got in a gun fight in a hallway

I highly recommend the BRT linear comp.  I used it on a 11.3" till I got

a suppressor. It's about the same size as a regular flash hider.

With no suppressor on a 11.5”, I’d opt for a Surefire Warcomp and their Warden, or a Griffin Blast Shield and any of their “taper mount” devices. Plus, you’ll already have a QD device should you ever get one of their suppressors.

The Warden / Warcomp route seems like a good option for un-suppressed.

YHM PHANTOM 5C2 reduces the flash to nearly imperceptible. Costs less than $30.

On my 11.3" build (which is an 'other' weapon, as opposed to a pistol...hence the VFG), I went with a Midwest Industries Blast Diverter to help keep blast and concussion forward, but it's still a pretty small unit not much bigger than your typical A2 cage, so it doesn't add any considerable size and weight as other blast-cans or forwarding devices.

A bit louder than a some of the bigger can-type blast diverters, but still a considerable help for the shooter and to the immediate side for blast/concussion.  Good for a sleek grab-n-go gun that you're not planning on suppressing, and 5.56/.223 recoil is so minimal that I don't feel like I'm missing any controllability without a muzzle brake or comp.

IMO "main defense rifle" suggests a flash hider.  If you're doing CQB indoors at knight... flash hider.  Why not plan ahead and get a QD flash hider?  Who really needs a comp for a 556 defense gun?   GL

I went with an EFAB, after watching that TTAG 3 Part Muzzle Device Series. Wasn't the best at any one thing, was the best for everything combined. I had an 11.3"

That's 100% subjective until benchmarked competitive Lumen Tests are conducted on it.

I just ordered a Rearden 3 Prong B class ready FH for my 350 Legend  build, so I'm right there with you on favoring prong FH over enclosed.

Another FH shoot out is way overdue.
The last ones done are very outdated.

I've tried A2s and linear comps on 11.5's, too much flash and fireball.  I really like the AFAB\EFABs on my 16" barrels, but the concussion was a little more than I like on 11.5.  Pronged flash hiders of some variety work the best for me on short barrels no can. Wilson accu-tac on my 11.5 was the winner.

I recently installed a JMac Customs flash hider / compensator (GFHC) on my 12.5" 5.56. It has an option for the KeyMount interface. Only have several hundred rounds on it, but so far it seems like a nice middle ground between a flash hider and a brake. I had a Dead Air flash hider on the gun before that. I do see a little more flashes compared to the DA flash hider, but it still works pretty well and it does noticeably help with muzzle rise
