working on my bhd build, i seem to recall that someone had said the large round forward assist was used on the a2 upper.  does anyone know?  or was it just the standard round forward assist?

[#2]
I've yet to see a 727 upper with a large button forward assist.  I have, however, seen 723 uppers with the large button, but only in conjunction with a .625 diameter barrel.

I think some of the confusion is coming from this photograph:

The RO727 on top is the most distinctive, and shows the A1 lower forging used, however, under the stock, on the right side of the photograph is an upper receiver with a large button forward assist.  At a glance, one might think that it's another 727 with a large button forward assist, however if you can see the A2 stock assembly- it's an M16A2 with a large button forward assist.

Again, I've yet to see evidence of a 727 with a large button forward assist, and I suspect that both the 727, and the .750 barreled 723s were too "late" to have had the large button forward assist.

Early 723s, however, using the .625 barrel are seen with the large button forward assist, usually in conjunction with an A1 upper without the case deflector.  An example is clearly visible in Ekie's carbine guide above.

The 723 is a very interesting carbine, in and that the earliest 723s had vinyl acetate coated stocks, A1 uppers and lowers with teardrop and large button forward assists, and .625 barrels, and ended their lifespan with fiberlite stocks, C7 uppers, A2 lowers, and .750 notched barrels.  The RO723 was truly a transitional model with the only real consistent factors being the A2 pistol grip and 1/7 twist 14.5" barrel.

The 727 displays much less variation, with the only real variation being whether an A1 or A2 style lower forging was used.

Thanks for the info Augee.  One less thing I have to swap out then.

Who knew the 723 was such a complicated beast.

I think of the 723 as liberating, not complicated.  You can vary quite a bit and still have an accurate clone.  Worst case, call it a "Transitional 723" and you're good to go.

true kinda like an air force or idf build.  whatever period correct parts thrown together.

IIRC, the large button FA will work on an A1 lower, but not and A2 lower, which is why they started making them scalloped, then just smaller. The large button, unscalloped one would be correct for a rearsenal build of any A1 variant IMO. You see the releived (scalloped) ones from time to time. The large button hits on the A2 buffer tube reinforcement.

yeah i have the large full round and large full round that has a flat on it to clear the a2 lowers.

what scalloping are you referring to?  got a pic?

From what I can tell, yes. Note that the replacement LM marked A1 uppers often had the full round large FA's. I'm just guessing that when they found out they didn't clear the new lowers they modified some, then engineered the new smaller FA. It makes as much sense as anything.

Would a 733 qualify for for the era, or did it come about afterwards?

I picked up an 733 upper a while ago and was trying to decide if I should BHD/retro it (Aimpoint 5000, 6 hole CAR handguards, etc), or leave it as-is
"Oh, bother," said Pooh, as he pulled the pin on another grenade...

Well then...

It's not quite perfect; I have a set of slim handguards on order from RRA (hopefully they're the 6 hole ones!), and I'm still trying to find a proper light/mount for it...

And an old aimpoint and mount...

But in the mean time, this will have to do..

I know it's not perfect, it's still an A2 lower...but it's all I got

Close, but the full round is a USGI replacement part, not a factory original part.

cool thanks for the info.  so there was a period where no more replacement teardrops were being installed?  how long were the full round and full round with a flat used?

I hate to keep bringing this up, but I think it'd be great if this thread was moved to the A2 section, and possibly pinned, where it would be a great resource.

Great looking gun. If we could have could have SBRs here in the Republik of Illinois that's pretty much the first SBR I'd have to get. As it is, I had to make mine a pistol. Oh, and I did mine with an A1 lower.

I didn't leave the optics on. I just tried them on for size.

I've thought about doing the foam sleeve. I haven't really shot it too much so I haven't decided whether or not to sleeve it yet. If we could have SBR's here in the Republik of Illinois I'd spend the $200.00 for a tax stamp in a heartbeat. Hell, here in the Republik of Illinois we can't even conceal carry. what are you guys thoughts on running an optic off say an A1 handle?

I'm about to get into my a1 build and would like the option, but i really don't care for flattops, so I'd have to mount to the handle.

I've seen a lot of it in this thread, just wondering how the sight picture / weld works out.

Doc, my little brother was just denied on an SBR application here in NC; CLEOs in this county are fucking clueless.  He's probably going to set up a revokable trust at some point.  But yeah, definitely try the foam sleeve / rubber tip thingy.

Honestly, the sight picture is a bit high which makes your cheek-weld less than solid.  Still doable and it served our toughest operators for many years but unless you're building a clone (like the ones in this thread), I'd advise you to go flattop.

My main objective of the rifle is an a1 carbine ( kiss / israeli build).

The optic is a secondary option, and I would most likely go with a gooseneck mount if I went that route.

Its an irons primary rifle for the most part.

That's an awesome rifle very much in the "spirit" of these builds, but I wouldn't worry myself over the mount.

The ARMS mount isn't the period correct mount either, a carry handle weaver mount with vertical split rings and an older (longer) Aimpoint is the correct setup for the '93 era.

In other news, my Aimpoint 5000 went tits up the other day.

Rheostat doesn't work properly anymore and it drains batteries like a motherfucker.  This is the second vintage Aimpoint I've managed to bust... in the same way, the other was an Aimpoint 1000.  I'm not quite feeling this legendary Aimpoint quality these days - especially considering that I've seen many an M68CCO, much newer and much updated broken in exactly the same way.

Many of the SOF guys I've talked to, some of whom are "direct descendants" in a way of some of the folks pictured here are none too complimentary about the "CompMs" either.  They're very happy that they have EOTechs available now and that Aimpoints aren't the only choice.

I meant buying a Dick Swan product. As to the Aimpoint, I have an older RX-7 and the electronics are getting very expensive to replace. I've been in touch with a guy who refurbishes the combo switches, perhaps there are similar people who can repair your Aimpoints?

I copied on the Dick Swan thing.

My point is still not to worry about buying one even if you're wanting to be "correct," it's still not the correct part, so if you don't want to, there's almost zero reason to consider it.

Honestly, I know that Aimpoint won't repair them, and since I got them pretty cheap, I've more or less just written them off, but it would be interesting to hear if there are people who can repair them and how much it would cost.

The 1000 is really not worth repairing at all, IMHO, but the 5000 might be nice to get back up running.
