Anyone know who was the first to come out with the 80% lower receiver?

The first AR ones I saw were cast ones form the Tannery shop and National Ordnance. Had a lot more required to be done on them but there were jigs out then to finish them out. Not sure who were the first to sell an AR one though.

Do you know what year that was?

Not really. Maybe 2001 or 2002. Probably search the archives using Tannery shop and find a time frame. Earliest one I found was a 9/2002 post. Incomplete firearm frames for different guns have been around for a long time though. If I remember right they used to call them dummy receivers or incomplete receivers in some of the ads.

The first ones I bought were in 2001 and they were like Pursuit said, considered 40%, 50% and 60% receivers, there was a hell of a lot more to do on them than now a days.  You didn't just pop one out in an hour!
