I was issued an XM177E2 back in 1991 in 2nd Ranger Batt and still have my Arms Room Card. Bought an 80% lower and sent it to Braceman for engraving and re-profiling which turned out fantastic. Been putting together parts for the past few months and finally able to start painting soon (w/Norrels dark gray) and putting it together. Majority of the parts are time period correct Colt parts. Only missing a couple period correct parts. Will be above 16" with setup but will probably wait putting together until I can save the money for a Colt Moderator and SBR this. (dont worry about the upper put together I have an SBR already so I'm legal).

NEW COMPLETED PICS IN THIS FIRST POST AT THE BOTTOM

Just so everyone knows also, I built this XM177 just the way I carried it early 90's. (not the way it was built during nam')

Parts list Lower:
80% Lower engraved and reprofiled
Colt A1 Grip
Colt Grip Screw and washer
Colt Trigger/Hammer set (also have a set that was neutered)
Colt many circle mag release set
Colt Bolt Release
Colt semi no-tick Safety
Colt Pivot Pin
Colt Aluminum Acetate Buttstock
Colt 2 Position Buffer Tube
Colt Round Buffer and spring
Colt Buffer Tube Nut
New trigger guard
New Take Down Pin

Upper Parts List:

Colt Charging Handle
Colt Tear Drop Forward Assist
Colt Early Port Door
Colt 11.5 LW Barrel Assy w/FSB shaved bayo LUG from the factory
Colt 6 hole Handguards
Colt Barrel Nut Assy
Retro Moderator w/grenade ring

Misc Stuff:
2 Original Copies of DA PAM 750-30
Copies of XM177E2 Draft Copy and Unclassified Copy
Period Correct Inspection Stamp
20 Round Colt Magazines
20 Round Magazine Bags issued in Vietnam to seal your mags from the damp jungles
Mags are loaded with every 5th round a Tracer
Also have an Original Colt 1x4 scope (carry handle mount) that a buddy is giving me. He got them from his arms room when they were just going to throw them out.

Is the barrel a govt profile? Or is it cut and threaded or did you actually find a Colt LW? Cant tell.

Nope it's an actual Colt LW w/bayo lug factory cut.

They might only work if you have the photobucket "fix" but here are some original pics I posted awhile back

https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Commercial___Export_Colt_610__XM177__and_USGI_XM177E2_pics/123-702510/

I have to ask though, was your "CAR-15" still in original configuration that late, or what it already rebarreled/reuppered? There was still "A1 ammo" floating around until the late 90s, so either would still be possible.

Got it in original configuration. Lucked out a while back in the EE.
And thanks for the original pics. I've been saving all I can find of original xm177e2s to see any differences.

Looks like you applied a little work to those bolt release bumps. Good work.

That is a cool build and a rare one with actual history.

Congrats

It is going to look great!  I am a little confused on the serial number though.  Did the XM177E2 that you had in the service have the exact same rollmarks on the magwell that are found on 80% receiver that was engraved by Braceman?  I think that the 8,000,000 serial number range began in the 1980s and they stopped making the Govt. Property AR-15 marked XM177E2s in 1970 from what I've read.   Their serial number range was 900,000 through 909,999.  They used a different serial number range for the commercial export version of the XM177E2.  Does anyone out there have any answer for the XM177E2 having an 8,000,000 serial number?

Also, don't forget to neuter fire control parts.  If you put them in as shown it could go full auto by slam firing even if you don't have an auto sear installed.

I myself have been wondering about the sn range for the past 6 months when I started researching but I know the numbers are correct. I'm pretty sure our Armorer wouldn't let a mistake thru even though mistakes do happen. I was issued that rifle for quite a while as was the rest of the fist teams (13f Forward Observer).
Don't have any pics of it as I lost most of my pics from my time there. Still have some of us calling in Little Birds at Cambell mid 1991.
OH yeah I did mention in my post that I already have a neutered fcg.

Looks awesome man! Very cool you were able to replicate your issued weapon down to the SN!

Wow, looks great! Well done. If you wipe some oil on the norrells, it will darken it and make it look older/cooler. Also If it's too flat for you, you can buff it with some denim to get a little sheen out of it.

Wow, Very nice!
Thanks for posting all of the photos.

Great work, and a nice ensemble of parts and accessories.
And how cool could it be to a have a replica of the weapon that you carried.

I’m on week 8 of waiting on a Braceman GAU-5/A/A engraving job. Hopefully by the time he gets done with it and I get the lower milled out, Norrell’s will be stocked up. Otherwise I’ll bust out my tree fiddy!
