As the title states, will an Aero M4E1 upper work with a standard Clamshell type vice block such as:

https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/rifle-tools/bench-vise-blocks/ar-15-m16-upper-receiver-action-block-prod22385.aspx

I'm not really thrilled with the type that attach at the take-down pin holes in fear of breaking while torqueing barrel nuts.

That vice block may not be a perfect fit, but it should do the job.

FWIW, I've used the vice blocks that attach to the pins for dozens of builds with zero issues...including putting quite a bit of torque to remove barrel nuts that have too much loctite on the threads.  They also have the added bonus of working on AR-10s as well as AR-15s.

Hell with flat tops two chunks of 2x4 to clamp the receiver  in a vice will work.

Technically speaking if you're doing muzzle devices you should be using barrel blocks clamped directly the the barrel as close as possible to the muzzle....but almost no one does that. That's why you see sheared off barrel pins/extensions when some goes ham handed on an upper secured in a vise.

Something something torsional forces and something something leverage.  People not think it be like it is, but it do - Eugene Stoner

Thanks for the help folks.  I just ordered the plastixrev.  Seems legit and it comes with the pic rail top so you can lay it horizontal and really torque on it.  I could do without, and have used the ghetto wood and vice technique, but it was too sketchy.

You won't be disappointed with them.  I have an ar15/10 set of their stuff and their 1911 block.  Been using them for a few years now without any issues.  Just gotta make sure the vice is tight before you put some ass on the cheater bar....but that goes for any of these receiver holding blocks

I suggest you also pick up a small bench, but I'm sure you were already thinking about it after trying to assemble that upper on a tiny table like that.

In my opinion, using any device that inserts into the barrel extension is the best way to damage your barrel or upper. Putting torque on a barrel nut or muzzle device will put most of those ft/lbs on the index pin of the barrel. I have heard of damage being done to the lugs of the extension too.
