So I'm going to be sending a colt 6920 in to be chopped from 16.1 to 14.5 and it got me thinking about the little "step" that's milled on the barrel just before the muzzle device. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

Why is that there? And, is it something I should/can ask be "re-added" when I have them chop it down? I'm building a block 1 clone and they have it.

TIA!

Thin profile for light weight.

Step up at muzzle for adequate meat and diameter for muzzle devices, including suppressor mount or direct thread suppressor if required for an adequate shoulder.

In the case of your barrel, the raised part nearer the chamber is for the gas block. Called the “gas block journal.”

The thinner part closer to the chamber is to reduce weight and move th rifle’s balance point forward.

There is adequate diameter at the muzzle of your barrel that no step up is needed for a good shoulder.

OP, have you considered selling the 16” and just buying a 14.5”? You’d likely be happier with the results.
Either way, John Thomas at Retro Arms Works can handle the job.

People really don't know just how much manufacturing influences design in everything around them.

Thank you for all the replies!

Yeah, I am considering selling the upper locally and then parting together a clone correct upper.... Last night I realized that the MP - 1/7 twist markings on the 16.1 barrel are basically right at 14.5, so the cut would go right through them.. Wouldn't be very synthetically pleasing.

Adco has an option to add that "M4 Step" when cutting down the bbl.

Pretty sure that is referring to the M4 step for M203.
