What can be used to clean & strip a dirty & greasy upper & handguard?  I'm thinking some kind of solvent that can get in all of the nooks & crannies & make it pristine again?

Brake cleaner and air compressor is what I use.

Wear safety glasses/goggles (goggles are better sealed on your face).  Do the spraying outside.  Have a brush ready and the brake cleaner dries fast.  Spray, brush, spray, brush till you're happy with how clean it is.

The metal should have some oil applied to it to protect it as the spray cleaner will strip it dry of protective/lubricating oils.

Brake cleaner.  The 3M stuff seems to have a bit more pressure behind it.

See if any of the local chains are running a sale so you can get it for $1 or $2 per can.

Ok great, seems brake cleaner is gonna be the way to go.  Ultrasonic would be nice, but I don't know who has one.

Thanks for the advice.

No plastic? Then non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
It can still damage some plastics.

Plastic parts? Then use polymer safe Gun Scrubber, or just some alcohol. Denatured by the quart is cheaper than the same thing sold as rubbing alcohol. If you use that use a spray bottle, or just soak it for a few minutes.
Hot water and Tide or dish soap work well too.
The polymer safe Gunscrubber is mostly alcohol.
Electrical contact cleaner is a good degreaser and plastic safe.

Rubbing alcohol contains water. Denatured alcohol doesn't.

Simple Green.  50/50 water and Simple Green solution.  Throw everything in container with the solution and soak for a day.  Scrub parts a bit with a brush.  Rinse with clean water.  Enjoy sparkling gun parts.

simple green or other similar quality degreaser a brush and a hose....scrub it down real good. Hose it off and then hit it with a blowdryer/hot sun/compressed air....oil components as necessary

Be careful about using original Simple Green on aluminum as it will harm it.  Simple Green Pro HD (from Home Depot) is aluminum safe as is Simple Green Aircraft & Precision Cleaner.

Using a parts washer to clean an AR-15 22lr

I'm not a fan of parts washers on aluminum/anodized guns. All steel big stuff like a heavy machineguns they're the cats meow... I don't think kroil will have enough solvent for what OP needs.

OP, if I was you, I'd take the hand guard off, wipe the chunks off with a rag/brush, and then go at it with the garden hose, dawn, and a scrub brush. Then some brake cleaner to get the finite bits off and blast out the nooks and crannies.

Then get oil on the steel parts faster than Clinton fucks over the American people.

Having the HG off also let's you get all around the barrel/nut and gas block.

I recommend spraying the barrel with black grill/engine paint when you have it degreased and clean. Then you don't need oil on it. Let the paint cure for 24 hours before firing. I've yet to have any problems with paint coming off by heat and of course it won't get chipped under the HG so long as you're careful when installing it.

Dawn dishwashing detergent and an old toothbrush.
It is a de-greaser and won't harm polymers / plastics.
Then rinse with very hot water.
Light oil coat after.

Double using good eye protection when using any spray or pressurized cleaners!

I had good luck with Tide for things like that also.

I concur completely.
Been using the same procedure for years, works great.
I learned it from a precision bench rest competitor.

Another really bad choice for aluminum.

Remind me to never buy a used gun
